

Madeleine was an only child and was predeceased by her parents Pierre and Virginia Guerin, and her loving husband of 41 years Tom Johnson. She is survived by her sister-in-law Beverly Bray and husband Steve of Mechanicsville, and her sister-in-law Mary Kaye (Katie) Gay of Providence Forge.
Madeleine graduated with a BS degree in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University where she also obtained a master’s degree in social work. She was a longtime employee of the Virginia Department of Social Services and a former director of the Capital Area Training Consortium where she met her husband, Tom.
Madeleine was interested in human behavior and enjoyed engaging others in conversation and making friends. She led an active lifestyle and practiced yoga and meditation. Madeleine was proud of her French ancestry and enjoyed researching and learning about her family history. She was a Master Gardener and a member of the Salisbury Garden Club who surrounded herself with plants and flowers in her home and garden. Madeleine was a talented artist and enjoyed photography, drawing, and painting. Her husband Tom introduced her to the game of tennis and it became one of her lifelong passions where she could be seen regularly on the court up until her recent health challenge. Madeleine had a special affection for golden retrievers and for her beloved goldendoodle Quincy who she leaves behind.
Madeleine was blessed with many good friends and neighbors who stood beside her with their love and support. The family is thankful and grateful to them and to the doctors and nurses at VCU Health for her excellent and compassionate care.
A memorial service will take place at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, July 23, at the Woody Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel, 1020 Huguenot Road in Midlothian. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
