Mary was born on September 23, 1943 in Louisville Kentucky (just 3 miles from Churchill Downs). Growing up surrounded by a large extended family of cousins Mary developed a strong sense of connection and generosity that would define her life. She graduated from Holy Rosary high school in Louisville, Kentucky, and attended Bellarmine University before beginning her employment with AT&T in 1965. She worked at ATT until the birth of her children and returned to work briefly as a secretary after her children entered high school.
On April 24, 1965, Mary married David Jerome Peterson Senior. Mary and Dave raised three children: Michelle Peterson Ambrose (Doug), David Jerome Peterson Junior (Erin) and Amy Peterson. Following Dave’s career, the family moved to various cities across the eastern United States, ultimately settling down in Richmond, Virginia.
Mary‘s greatest joy in life was her family. Above all, she loved spending time with them, supporting her children and grandchildren in their activities and areas of interest. Her proudest role was Grammy to her five grandchildren: Kendall Ambrose, Paige Ambrose, Avery Ambrose, Merritt Peterson and Alex Peterson.
Mary had a “life of the party” spirit and she never met a stranger. She welcomed people with open arms, even inviting those without plans to join in holiday celebrations. She was extremely social, enjoyed playing tennis, and thrived in the company of friends, old and new. She had a fondness for children, especially babies and never passed by a baby without making a fuss.
Mary supported her husband through the many moves his career required, creating a home wherever they landed. She played on social tennis leagues over the years, making friends along the way.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David J Peterson Senior ; her parents, Mary and Louis J Borntraeger Senior ; and her brother Francis Earl Borntraeger. She is survived by her children and grandchildren, and by her brother Louis John Borntraeger (Sandy), and many dear extended family and friends.
Mary’s life was a shining example of devotion to family, love and generosity. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who have had the privilege of knowing her.
A celebration of life will be held at a date to be determined in Louisville, Kentucky
