My heartfelt sympathies to Mike’s family & loved ones.  Mike had a warm smile and bright eyes that matched his loving personality.  He taught me much about the outdoors. Saved me from a snake one time, taught me how to track deer  - his love for the outdoors was evident. Finding out he was a hike leader did not surprise me, he shared his knowledge and love of the outdoors with others.  You are missed and remembered.  God bless you Michael.✝️

It is with complete sorrow that George and I announce the passing of our friend Mark Scalf. Mike recently shared with us that he had been diagnosed with mercury poisoning and that the cause was his lunchtime habit of eating tuna fish. The neurological symptoms were progressive and debilitating. We can only presume that grief over the mercury poisoning along with other health issues that were complicating his prognosis led Mike's decision to take his life this past Wednesday. 


Traversing many miles over mountains and streams fosters close friendships. As backpackers, we become family. Mike was a caring and nurturing leader. Reminiscing with friends over the past day or so, one mentioned how out of shape she felt on her first hiking trip that was organized by Mike. In his kind, reassuring way, he encouraged her by suggesting she set the pace, saying the rest would follow her lead-no pressure. Mike's love for the outdoors and adventure was inspiring. Another described Mike as her coach, prompting her to do things she would have never contemplated doing before, including climbing at the Via Ferrata and backpacking at Dolly Sods. One of my fondest memories was a rainy morning several years ago when a hike had been cancelled. Mike and I texted our disappointment to one another and hit the trail anyway. His quiet steady camaraderie will be missed. 


Mike was truly a wonderful person. Our heart go out to Ginny, her sons and Mike's Family.

Mike joined CVT on May 3, 2012. As an experienced backpacker, he soon began leading trips for our group, all of which are remembered fondly by those who attended. This is a huge loss for all of us.

Arlene,Robert & Susie, my heart is broken and there is no words that i can give you to make this any better. I want to give my condolences to you and the family we are praying for all of you, I love you all and Michael will be truly missed, God needed another Angel and I'm sure he is watching from heaven, he was a great guy and i didn"t get to see him a lot but he is my family and i will miss him. Mike was a good person and talented electrician that willingly shared his skill with those new to the trade. He was a loyal employee and I looked forward to seeing him move into a supervisory role with my company.My deepest condolences to Mike's family. I am keeping you all in my prayers.

I have been on a few hikes led by Mike and Ginny.  When I saw them together, I remember thinking what a perfect couple they made.  Mike was a sweet, sensitive soul.  My deepest condolences to his family, Ginny and her two sons.
