Born in Petersburg, Virginia on March 5, 1958, Palmer was the daughter of the Cary Jones Hoy & William Harwood Hoy Sr. She is proceeded in death by her parents, and brother, Bill. She is survived by her husband, James Johnson of 42 years, and daughter, Mariah Johnson. She is also survived by sister Mary Hoy Holten, step-mother, Judy Johnson, cousins Jere Bunting, Eddie Bunting, Cary Bunting Farr, Margaret Bunting Ward, Hugh Hoy, Maggie Hoy Heckman, and step brothers Matt and Brian Walker. Palmer touched the lives of many, and created friendships old and new that meant so much to her.
Palmer and long time friend, Barbara White owned and operated a small gift shop in Brandermill, Simply Said, opening in 1987 and closing in 1995. Together they built a community store where they became close friends with many of the frequent customers. In later years, Palmer thoroughly enjoyed her career with Chesterfield County Schools, particularly at Monacan High School where she worked as the Clinic Assistant for the last 7 years. She adored her students and coworkers.
Palmer, Jim and Mariah shared a bond that many families admired. Throughout the years the Johnson Family made close ties with the Almond Family, the Corcoran Family, and the Markiewicz Family through their children.
Palmer had multiple hobbies and interests including beading, whether it be jewelry or beaded tapestries, she was always crafting in one way or another. Palmer enjoyed walking miles upon miles on the beaches of North and South Carolina, and Southwest Florida. Shelling with her daughter was a particular joy for them both. While sports were not her foray, she was obnoxious in her passion for the only sport she understood, watching and cheering on Washington Capitals ice hockey team. Palmer took much pride in her holiday décor, Christmas being her favorite time of year. She would display the mantel with Santa figures, douse the house is holly, and dress the Christmas tree over hours and hours until it was just right.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU on behalf of Palmer at 1000 E Broad St. Richmond VA 23219.
