Sabiye, I no longer expect to stop missing you. But I've made peace with that. Missing you means I still love you.  Seven years later, I still cry sometimes. I still wish I could call you. And maybe, in some quiet corner of the universe, you hear me.

Dear Dr. Masho,
You gave me a chance when others hadn't. I remember the way you stole our attention on the first day of epidemiology in medical school and sustained it through the block. On the last day, I approached you with enthusiasm about the topic and you matched it as we rejoiced about how much we loved public health. 3 years later when I didn't match into residency, you picked me up. You reminded me about my passion for learning and taught me how to overcome hardships. You gave me a chance to pursue a Masters in Public Health and I was rewarded with a second opportunity to learn from you again. I eventually matched into residency and we shared this accomplishment together. Because without you and the opportunity you gave me, I don't know where I would be today. I know you always cared about the whole community, but it was your dedication to individuals that I will always remember you for. Your positivity, passion and perseverance will be missed. Thank you again for all that you have done.

Many, MANY regrets for not having seen you sooner,  my Cal Berkeley classmate. May your young ladies always feel your presence and know that NOTHING, especially physical death, will keep your love from them.

Saba Masho was a force to be reckoned with. She was the hardest worker I have ever known, and I was constantly in awe of her passion and energy. My awe of Saba however, was not just about her ability to constantly work so hard. My awe was that despite the constant work, the endless deadlines, the ever-increasing responsibilities, Saba was a good, kind person. She remained openhearted, always. She was brilliant and busy and successful, and she was kind and endlessly patient and humble. She encouraged everyone to be the best version of themselves and if there was anything she could do to help, she would do it. I, like so many others, have benefitted from the kindness and love of Saba. From the time I was a child, she was a source of guidance and advice. She was incredibly supportive of me continuing my education and gave me so many opportunities to gain experience. She was my mentor, my teacher, and an emotional support both professionally and in life. Also, she was my family. I will always cherish those memories of our families spending time together. She always called me one of her daughters. She was one of my mothers. I cannot express fully, how blessed I have been because of Saba. She was my guardian angel and I will miss her immensely. Saba was like a shining star, bright and beautiful, and although I wish I could have more time in her presence, I am just so grateful I had any time with her at all. I loved her so much. She was the best example of how to live your life, work with purpose and passion, and live with an open and kind heart. We are the lucky ones to have known her and I aim to live my life as Saba lived hers. I will work hard, I will choose kindness and humility, and I will smile every chance I get. Thank you, Saba, for teaching me that. To Abraham and Dellina and Helina, I love you all so much and I know that Saba lives in each of you. And the world is so much better for that.

Sabinaye, you were not only my friend but also my sister.  It was a blessing to have you in my life. You were the most humble, thoughtful, and strong people that I know. You were an amazing person with a lot of positive traits and a strong belief in your faith. Thank you for mentoring and guiding my daughter who you call “my child” and many others. It is going to be very tough to live without our friendship.  But, knowing that you are not anymore in pain gives me a comfort.

Saba was one of the most driven, humble, and compassionate people I've been blessed to have in my life. She was always in my corner to support, encourage, and mentor me - never failing to be my fiercest cheerleader. The world has lost an incredibly strong woman, admired and loved by many, but I take comfort in the fact that she is no longer suffering and is watching over those she cared so deeply for. For first time I saw  our dear sister Sabi almost 2 yrs before her death in our church @ (Grace in Christ Evangelical Church Richmond Virginia) with her husband Abraham & their 2 daughters Delina & Helina, it was a normal greeting  like all Church members, but I knew after her death more, who was Sabi. She was one of the few 
successful HABESHA people 
(Eritreans & Ethiopians )& one of the heroes  who are fighting by making many researches  to bring a change in  medical world & she invested her life in helping & mentoring many students, so we  lost an intellectual , understandable, 
& hard worker  sister . Her loss is for the family ,for our community, for the VCU school of Medicine , for the medical world, and for the entire world.
May God comfort all her family & friends.

Dear Sabiye,
I heard your loved ones call you Sabi. Although we never met face to face, I know from our single FaceTime conversation with Delina,  Helena, and Abraham, and from your beautiful memorial service that you were a kind, and beautiful woman, who lived her life for those around her. I was amazed to see the uplifted spirit of your husband Abraham, who chose to celebrate your life by smiling just the way he said you always did for the 25 years you two were together. I can tell you touched every life that you came across. And you will always be remembered as a kind hearted and selfless woman who served God, her family, and her community. In my religion, one is believed to live on in the legacy left behind. Saba will live on and remain with us always. Sabi, my beloved cousin and my childhood best friend, my adolescence consultant and now my comforter. You left a hole in my heart! There is no way I can digest and understand this tragedy. Sabity, you accomplished a lot in your short life that most of us wouldn't dream to do a fraction of it even if we would be given another 100 years. Saba was a dedicated March of Dimes volunteer who works tirelessly in support of Centering Pregnancy.  She guided me as I worked to expand the services across the state and helped meet the goal of improving pregnancy outcomes for our babies.  I am so honored to have known Saba.


Saba was a colleague. We worked on several projects together that are actually still in progress (but I promise to get them published!). We continued to collaborate, even after I left VCU. We always met at a coffee shop when I returned to Richmond -- we talked about our work but also talked about lots of things, including our families. Saba was one of the most caring and thoughtful colleagues I have ever known. I never heard her say one bad word about anyone. She was incredibly insightful and I was always amazed about how she was able to balance so many things in her life -- certainly she worked a great deal and achieved a tremendous amount professionally, but she also had a laser focus on her family. Saba talked often about her daughters. I only met them once but I could see how Saba was so proud of her girls.  I am sure they will grow up to be wonderful young women that would make Saba smile. She had a wonderful smile. I miss Saba and am so very sorry that I will not be able to know her better, but I am grateful for having known her. As a small tribute to her and because there is such a large Ethiopian community in Israel, I have had a tree planted in Saba's memory." May Her Memory Be a Blessing."

Saba was a master of many things, she was an exceptional woman in so many ways.  Her razor sharp wit along with a natural comedic timing hasn’t been mentioned yet...She was the best at quietly putting any silly thing going on in its place with such a quick zinger, that not only made me laugh, but also put all things into perfect perspective.  Saba Lesson:  Don't get distracted with things that don't matter, stay focused...She was a consummate epidemiologist.  Laser focused, but without compartmentalizing (data reduction :-) ) so that everything else dissolved away...it’s hard to describe.  I loved and admired Saba so much.  I'd like to express my gratitude to her family for sharing her with me and so many others.  I tried not to be greedy, but I was and forever will be so grateful for such an amazing friendship.  


i cant begin to fathom that she is no longer with us. such an amazing woman, scholar and friend. i am a better person because she was my friend and encouraged me along the road of life.  i am truly saddened with her loss. i wish i had approriate words of sympathy for the family but am inadequate in this other than to say Saba was truly amazing and loved you so much, you were the center of her life,  even as she was a scholar and teacher, mentor and friend to her academic  students and colleages. we will all miss her very much.

Saba...You have been my friend, mentor, collaborator, co-author, and inspiration since we first met.  I am in awe of your grace, your compassion, your strength of person and character as well as the legacy of your scholarship and teaching.   Every presentation, article, meeting and conversation we have shared are a gift to my journey . Saba has been a dear colleague at VCU since 2003, when we first worked together in what was then the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health. Saba was a kind, compassionate person and was passionate about her research program in maternal and child health.  In my position administering our graduate programs, I observed Saba's love for her students.  She was a incredible mentor who guided students toward success--her PhD students were prolific in presenting and publishing their research before graduation.  Saba also made sure that her doctoral students grew in their leadership skills, encouraging them to take on increasing levels of  responsibility on her research team to prepare them for future roles after graduation.  Saba held the leadership role of graduate program director for two years and was a committed advocate for the success of all students.  As a leader, she supported her employees, encouraging personal growth and thinking "outside the box."   She was a strong woman, admired and loved by many.  We will miss you very much, Saba.
