She was born on August 8, 1920 in SLC Utah to Gustav and Anna Kleven who immigrated to the United States from Norway after joining the LDS Church. Adeline lost her mother at the age of 10 and when her father remarried, she was influenced greatly by Violet, her stepmother. She attended Granite High School and graduated in 1938.
