Anne Carter Hopkin was born January 13, 1933 in Salt Lake City, Utah and passed away peacefully at home on February 10, 2023 in Salt Lake City, Utah in her 90th year with her husband of 53 years, John, at her side.
Her parents met in Boston, Massachusetts. Sam Carter was attending law school at Harvard and Dorothy Schweikhart was studying violin at the Boston Conservatory. They lived in Washington and came back to Utah when Dorothy was expecting. After Anne was born, Sam took a position with a law firm in San Francisco where Anne spent her childhood. They returned to Utah and Anne attended high school at Rowland Hall. She then attended college at Bryn Mar College in Pennsylvania where she studied history. History remained a lifelong interest. Anne married John Taggart Hopkin on June 18, 1971.
Denied the gift of easy sociability, she sought to find beauty and develop beauty in the natural world. As a young girl, she and her dog could be found on the trails in the Wasatch Mountains where she loved to go. She loved to garden. As a young person, she managed the very large garden of her parents in Cottonwood. John and Anne had smaller gardens as life went on.
She loved music and from an early age developed an understanding of classical music. John and Anne had the good fortune of living in San Francisco which has the best musical events, which they enjoyed to the fullest.
Anne loved words. She loved English literature and how it was constructed. She collected what turns out to be an enormous personal library. She read with great discipline, setting aside several hours every day.
Anne rose above trends and fads. She was who she was. She had complete integrity. She didn’t ever pretend to be anything other than what she was. She was interested in politics as a function of history and saw it that way. She was completely honest.
Anne is survived by her husband of 53 years, John Taggart Hopkin.
Burial was in the South Morgan Cemetery.
