Charles Vernon Johnson was born on July 23, 1946 to Harry Davis and Dorothy June Peck Johnson in American Fork, Utah. His mom and dad divorced and he was later adopted by Vernon Johnson, and then sealed to Vern and his mom, Dorothy.
Charlie grew up in American Fork. He attended American Fork High School, graduating in 1964. In 1966, he finished the electrical technology and instrumentation program at Utah Trade Technical Institute. He began working in the Technical Division at Hill Air Force Base soon after. Charlie loved working there. He found great satisfaction in the work he did. He retired from Hill Air Force Base after 40 years of service.
Charlie married Linda Preston in 1969 and they moved to Clearfield, Utah. They had two children: Travis in 1973 and Kimberly in 1977. Charlie and Linda divorced after 11 years of marriage. Charlie stayed in Clearfield, while Linda and the kids moved to Idaho.
Charlie enjoyed dancing, roller skating, wood working, and listening to music. He especially liked making furniture, such as chairs, tables, and benches. In more recent years, he developed a love for sewing (specifically vests, hats, drapes, and compression socks), and leading music. His favorite calling/position at church was leading the congregational hymns every Sunday; he did this with great enthusiasm. If you ever had the chance to sit and talk with Charlie, he would usually end up singing songs, even if he didn’t know the lyrics. He really loved music; all kinds of music.
Charlie was a determined man who thrived on routine. This was shown in his daily appointment for the past several years for a 10am breakfast at IHOP – he never missed a day, if he could help it.
Charlie passed away while at Davis County Hospital for a routine appointment. He was just ready to see his mom, his sister Dottie, and both of his dads again.
Charlie is survived by his two children, Travis (Elizabeth) Johnson and Kimberly Lynes; his grandchildren, Abby (Taylor) Petty, Sam Johnson, Megan Johnson, Travis Johnson, Kennedy Lynes (Reed Carter), Kaiden Lynes, Koreahna Lynes, and Kinlee Lynes; his sister, Sharron Johnson; and multiple nieces and nephews.
He will be missed.
