Corinne Larsen Sluder lived a full and very active life that began on May 2, 1924, and one day shy of her 93rd birthday, ended naturally on May 1, 2017. Her vibrant spirit is carried on by her four children, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, brother, and extended family and friends. Corinne, known affectionately as “Bubby” and a little less affectionately as the “Tiger Lady,” was born and died in Salt Lake City, Utah, living there most of her life. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons during her nine decades of adventures, among them: Be sure to release the ball when at the bowling alley or you’ll spend two months shopping on QVC from your couch due to major knee surgery. A week at Girls’ Camp should be a full production including costumed skits, big themes, and pranks. Forty isn’t too late to start a new hobby…hundreds of beautiful oil paintings resulted from finally pursuing her life-long dream. Grandmas can and should say “yes” when moms and dads say “no.” Shopping and going to lunch should be Olympic sports.
Corinne grew up on 5th South in Salt Lake City, causing a lot of mischief in that neighborhood throughout her childhood. She graduated from West High School in 1942 and worked “a man’s job” at Continental Oil during World War II, while writing to seven servicemen. Donell Dean Sluder was the first of those young men to return home from the war and they were married two months later on April 20, 1946. They lived in Salt Lake City, Colorado Springs, and Concord, California while raising their four children. Her four years in California gave her some of her happiest memories and inspired her to begin painting lessons. While her children grew up, she sewed dance costumes, ran Girls’ Camp, and was sports director at church, leading her team to several successive softball championships. During most of her adult life, she worked to support Diamond Electric, a family business started by her father in 1944. Corinne and her brother took over the business in 1974 and she worked there until the final months of her life. In their later years, Don and Corinne traveled the world, most often with a large group of her cousins. Her beloved husband passed away in 2005. She continued to travel, visiting family all over the United States. Throughout her life, she was an active member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.
She is survived by her children Pamela “Penny” (Tom) Reed; Pat; Jill (Duane) Astin; and Jack (Kay) Sluder; her grandchildren Mindy (David) Byrnes; Becky (Mike) Leatherbury; Jeff Astin; Sara Sluder; and Andy Sluder; her great-grandchildren Maddy, Ethan and Ryan Byrnes and Luke Leatherbury; and her brother Werner.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, May 4th from 6-8 P.M. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive, SLC, Utah. The funeral will be held on Friday, May 5th, at 2 P.M. also at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. There will be a viewing beginning at 1 P.M. prior to the services. Interment at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
