Eleanor was born on April 15, 1945, in East Carbon, Utah, to Andy Martinez and Mary Dillon. She later attended Salt Lake Community College, where she earned her Associate’s Degree, and went on to serve her community as a counselor at Valley Mental Health, helping countless individuals with compassion, patience, and strength.
On September 26, 1963, in Tooele, Utah, Eleanor married the love of her life and soulmate, Manuel Johnny Rodriguez. Their partnership was built on deep devotion and unwavering support for one another.
Eleanor known affectionately as “Big El” loved fishing, camping, sewing, and cooking. She found beauty in the colors of sunsets and peace in the smell of fresh mountain rain. Her grandchildren and great-grandson were her absolute world. She could be found at any number of events cheering them on, her unmistakable screams of encouragement echoing through high school gyms, sporting events, college graduations, dance recitals, and any activity they participated in. Her pride in each of them and their accomplishments was always evident on her face.
While her husband competed in and hosted karate tournaments, El supported him in every way—designing the GI’s worn by his students and loudly cheering him on from the sidelines during his matches. She was always the loudest and proudest supporter at any event.
El was a devoted mother, grandmother, and a friend to everyone. Her home was a gathering place known for the best Mexican food, heartfelt conversations, and impromptu parties. Most importantly, her home was a place of unconditional love and acceptance, where everyone was welcomed just as they were. She opened her doors and her heart freely, making anyone who entered feel like family. She was stubborn, fiercely loyal, endlessly kind, and loved unconditionally. She will be missed more than words can express.
Eleanor is survived by her soulmate, M. Johnny Rodriguez; her daughters, Stephanie Honrud, Tina Rodriguez, and Trisha Rodriguez; and her four grandchildren, Levi Honrud, Colton West, Taylor Rodriguez, and Hayden Nielsen. Her grandchildren will cherish every memory made, and miss her deeply. Her great-grandson, Gabriel Valdez, was incredibly fortunate to have known and spent time with her over the past six years.
She was preceded in death by her son, Bobby West; her father, Andy Martinez; and her mother, Mary Dillon. She was welcomed home by those who loved her, along with the many dogs, cats, and her bird she cherished and nurtured throughout her life.
