Howard Allan Katzman, 75, passed away on June 21st, 2022 at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah. Howard was born in Omaha, Nebraska on December 16, 1946 to David and Rose Katzman. He graduated from Wentworth Military Academy and attended the University of Denver for his undergraduate education. He served two years in the Army, including one year stationed as a medic during the Vietnam War. He graduated from Creighton Medical School in 1976 and subsequently completed an internship and residency in ophthalmology at Tulane University. He moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1980 to complete a fellowship in oculoplastic surgery and following that practiced as a physician and surgeon in the Salt Lake area for 40 years. He cofounded the Physicians Surgery Center in Millcreek, Utah. Howard loved his career in ophthalmology and he was available to his patients 24/7.
Howard was a high-energy, hardworking, “get it done” kind of guy. There was no job too big for him and no task too daunting – he started new businesses, built his dream house, and led his family on incredible road trip adventures across Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. He did absolutely everything for his beloved wife of 46 years, Sue, daughter Marilyn, and son David. His long-standing dream of having a dog around the house was doubly fulfilled in the last two years by his “granddogs,” Callie and Friend. Following his retirement in 2021 he spent much of his newfound free time bonding with them, loving them, and figuring out which fruits from the Murray Farmer’s Market were their favorites.
Howard’s love language was food – he enjoyed cooking for a crowd, especially around Thanksgiving, and loved to share a meal with friends and family. It thrilled him equally to introduce his loved ones to a great new restaurant he had discovered, and to serve them his own twists on his favorite restaurants’ recipes. Every Sunday morning, he went to Harmons Grocery to pick up ingredients for a grand meal he would cook that evening and enjoy a piece of coffee cake while reading The New York Times. He would call his kids from the store to hear about their weekends and let them know what he planned on cooking.
He was an avid golfer from the age of 12 and at an early age considered going pro. He won some of Utah’s most competitive amateur golf tournaments, and was a longtime member of Willow Creek Country Club where he made the best of friends.
Howard loved to spend his birthday and the holidays in Las Vegas with his family, and he could regularly be found at The Cosmopolitan’s buffet, at the Wynn’s sports book with his son, and at the Palazzo’s blackjack table with his daughter.
He is survived by Sue, David, and Marilyn Katzman (Christopher Doty), his sisters Betty Segell and Paula Albert, sister-in-law Jane Frisch, and nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 28th at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive, Millcreek, Utah 84106.
