“Dr. Jim” was born June 28, 1954 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Rev. Clarence and Betty Van Slooten. He spent his early childhood in San Diego, California before moving to Salt Lake City, Utah, where his father served as a minister. His grew up playing basketball, mowing lawns and living the farm life in Washington during the summer. He dearly loved growing up with his four brothers. He met the love of his life and his soul mate, Ann, in Salt Lake and the two were married in December of 1974.
Dr. Jim went to the University of Utah for his pre-chiropractic studies, and received his chiropractic degree in November 1977 from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He opened his chiropractic clinic in Salt Lake City in 1978 and maintained an abundant practice during his 36 year tenure. His Christian faith, enthusiasm, sense of humor and genuine love & concern for patients created a legacy that continues at the Holladay Chiropractic Center.
Known for his commitment to Christian ministry, Dr. Jim preached at the Salt Lake Rescue Mission monthly for over 30 years. His compassion for the elderly and disabled resulted in routine chiropractic house calls. He was also instrumental in the establishment of The Rising Community Church in 2006, where he was a founding member and served as a trustee and kids’ church leader until his passing.
Deeply loved by his family, Dr. Jim is survived by his wife, Ann; his daughter, Roanne Epps; son-in-law, Jason Epps; his son, Erik Van Slooten; and daughter-in-law, Paige Van Slooten. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren: Micah, Mandy, Sydney, Sammy, Brooklyn, Noah and Isaac.
His family and life verse is Proverbs 3:5-6, which reads “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge God and he will keep your paths straight.”
