Mr. Steed was an amazing and memorable teacher.  He actually succeeded in making physics classes - and tests - a fun and effective way to learn.  57 years later, he remains a wonderful memory.

  I am so happy that I got to spend  so much time with you every summer. We spent a lot of time camping in the high Unita mountains, Current creek and so many other places.  We would sing songs, roast marshmallows , look at the stars and talk about all the rock formations. We would talk about our hopes and dreams, everything and anything . My kids would watch for the right camper to come up the dirt road. We have so many great memories! Thank you  for being my friend and my Dad! One thing that I know John loved was Geology.  He could tell you all about the mountains and the canyons and rocks you were seeing.  Once he visited us when we lived in Tennessee, and we took him to Mammoth Cave in southern Kentucky.  I am glad he was able to visit the cave with us and tell us all about it.

Because of how young I am and how I live in California, I don’t have many memories of John, my Grandpa, but that just makes the memories I do have even more meaningful. One of my favorite memories was my first time talking to him in 2 years, during the summer of 2021. I was told by my family that John would happily talk to me if he could, so I tried, and he told me about his experiences in the army and how grateful he was that he didn’t have to shoot anyone, as they were heavens children. Another time, during Christmas in the same year, all the partying was over, and I walked into an empty room with my Grandpa, saying, “What a miracle it is that Christ was born.” He began to agree and talk about how he was challenged with keeping his religion in his life while being in the army. These conversations gave me so much respect for him putting his religion as a huge priority in his life, and I’m happy for the moments I got to live with him.

What I remember most about Grandpa Steed is the games I played with him as a kid. One of them was called Haunted Hotel. It started when Grandpa and Grandma came to Tennessee to visit during the summer. They were staying in my sister and my room. One night before they went to sleep we snuck into their “hotel” room and pretended to be ghosts to scare them. They pretended to be scared and called the manager, who was my other sister. She would come to see what was wrong, they would explain, and she would promise to take care of it. As soon as she left the ghosts would come right back. This game continued every night they stayed with us. Even when we moved to another house. Another game I remember was the famous hat game, where we would hide grandpa’s hats and he would chase us around the house to get them back. Looking back through these memories, it’s easy to see the love and patience he had to deal with our shenanigans. Even when we didn’t play so many games together anymore, that love was still evident.

Daddy, 
I wanted to continue my last memory, I ran out of characters. Another way that I was spoiled with your time was the trips we took together. Some of those were camping trips when I was younger, or trips to Idaho to visit your family and mom’s family. The Idaho trips slowed down after your parents passed away and Grandma Durant moved in with us. The summer when I was fifteen was the first time you participated in a teacher’s workshop in Los Alamos, New Mexico. During the time that you were there Mom and I flew in to visit you. This was the very first time I ever flew on a plane. We flew into Albuquerque and then transferred to Santa Fe where you picked us up. I had so much fun flying with mom, and sitting around reading during our layover in Albuquerque. I don’t remember how long we stayed but I remember how much fun we had together. We visited many historical sites and museums. One of my favorite memories from this trip was when we visited the Taos Pueblo in Taos. The three of us were walking on a sidewalk and a man and a woman were walking in front of us. The woman was wearing a short skirt and some construction workers were whistling at her.  Mom leaned over and asked you what you thought of the woman’s skirt. You replied “I would like to see it a little longer .” Mom smiled and said “Well just keep walking behind her, and you can see it for as long as you want.” You cried defensively “That’s not what I meant!” We both knew that was not what you meant, that’s why it was so funny. 
The next summer you went to NAU in Flagstaff Arizona. Just like Los Alamos, Flagstaff had far too many trees for you because they covered up all the geology. So we had to go to where the geology was uncovered. We went to the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, the Petrified Forest, the Meteor Crater. That year you taught me the names of all of the rock formations visible in the Grand Canyon. It was so fun to be in these beautiful places with you and learning from you. ❤️ Christine

To the man who meant a lot to me, thank you for welcoming me into your family with open arms, thank you for your daughter Julie. I remember going on hikes and bike rides with you, at the time it was hard with no notice but, they were some of the best times we spent together. I remember you always playing basketball in the living room with my Mathew and construction on the kitchen bench with Riley. I respect the love you had for your wife. Great Grandpa John , Kaylinn loved the time she spent with you and grandma great, when they lived at your house she would stand at the bottom of the stairs and ask if she could come up, you would set her a place at the dinner table, she didn’t always eat dinner because she had already eaten but, she never said no to ice cream. She loved playing hide the candy and find it game with you and grandma great. She loved sitting in the rocking chair with you. You swinging her in the back yard was always a good time, she loved walking to the park and playing there also. Thank you for all the great memories great grandpa John. Hi Daddy, 
I just wanted to write a few more of my memories of you. I am so thankful that you and mom followed the promptings you had to have another baby. Seven is a lot of children and I am sure you were not confident in your ability to care and provide for another child at that time.  I am sure that you both wondered if you had the energy to raise another child in your later years. I am so glad you had the faith to take on that challenge, because of that decision I had the opportunity to be part of this family. When I was in college I was asked several times if you guys were my grandparents, I always said “No they are my parents, but they have a grandson my age so I guess they could be”.  I have always appreciated that even though you were tired you would always stay up and help me with homework assignments that I left to the last minute. This meant even more because I know you were not a night person. You would always try to get us to go to bed by telling us it was closing time. I was used to seeing the phone cord disappear into a drawer because you put the receiver in the drawer so the phone wouldn’t wake you up. 

Whenever people ask me how many siblings I have and I tell them I am the youngest of seven, they ask me if I was spoiled. I don’t feel like I was spoiled with things, but I was spoiled with your time. By the time I was 14 years old all of my siblings were married or living on their own. 
When I was in junior high and high school. You and mom would take me to movies on Friday nights, or to the high school musical’s at Cottonwood or West high. You loved to support your students in their extracurricular activities. Many of our weekends were spent at dance, band or theater performances. We even went to a musical at Murray High School because it was one of my favorite plays, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” I enjoyed spending time with my friends from high school, but I always considered you and mom my best friends.

Daddy, 
I am so grateful that I had the privilege to be your daughter.  I, like Nephi, can truly say that “I was born of goodly parents.”  I learned from your example the importance of love in marriage and family. I always knew without a doubt that you and mom loved each other and were happiest when you were together. I found comfort in your love for each other and also had no doubt that you both loved me. 
I remember as a small child, I loved when you both would hold me between you and we would all hug and kiss each other. I called this a “kissy party”, and you couldn’t hug each other without me wanting to but in. Later on when I was a teenager we would sing the “I need a hug” song and hug each other before bed. 
When I met Ryan he showed me the same love and respect that you had for mom, and I knew I had found the perfect person for me to raise a family with. Now we make sure to always hug each member of our family after family prayer before we go to bed.
You always showed that same love to my children as they grew up. They always loved to dance with you in the living room, or play the hat game, or dig potatoes in your “potato dig site”, or play “haunted hotel.” Your example of love has blessed all of those who knew you, but especially your family.  I will love you always daddy.

One thing I loved about grandpa was that you never had to question if he loved you. It seemed to come naturally for him to ensure we each knew we were loved. He showed it through his actions, by devoting time to us, and he verbalized it every time you saw him. He was always saying, “I sure do love you guys”, and you knew he meant it. I love him too. I loved digging for potatoes with him in the potato dig site, I loved planting those potatoes with him in the spring, and then going inside and chasing him around the living room stealing his hats and hiding under grandmas bed where he’d pretend to be scary and drag us out. I loved when he’d turn on what I can only describe as Irish jig music, I know it wasn’t actually Irish but I don’t remember what it was, and he’d dance around the living room, and we’d giggle as he’d twirl us around. I loved when he got a new digital camera just like mine and he made me feel so special and smart when he’d come to me to help him figure out how to work it. I loved it when he’d tell us stories from when he was a little kid or a young man. I loved it when he’d talk about his mama or his uncle Hawley. Those parts of life with him were beautiful. I love him, and I know he really loved all of us. I miss dancing and playing and planting with you grandpa, I’ll love you forever.

Dear dad;

I remember the trip to Oregon when we went to your sister Lavila's funeral. We stopped at Crater Lake, the ocean, and I loved the conversation you and I had as we took turns driving. I miss the time we spent hiking up Lone Peak, and enjoying the view from the top You were an amazing dad, I love you.

I have so many fond memories of grandpa. My favorite game we played together we called the hat game. He had a large collection of baseball caps and us grandkids would grab all of them and try to hide them from grandpa while he chased us around the house. We always had so much fun and I would ask to play it with him every time I came to visit. When I was older I loved the quiet moments spent with him sitting outside on the porch. He would tell me about his life as we looked out at Mount Olympus. Sometimes we would look at those mountains through his telescope together. He loved to star gaze especially when he visited us In Tennessee where the stars were so easy to see. He taught me about the constellation, “Cygnus the Swan”.
He would play his guitar and sing in the living room and I would dance with him. My favorite songs he sang were, “Tie Me Kangaroo Down” and, “Burglar Boy”. Grandpa had a way of making everyone he talked to feel loved and important. He always made time to play with us grandkids and those will always be some of my favorite memories. He was one of the most Christlike people I know and I cherish the spirit I always felt with him. I love and miss you grandpa! 💗

I walked in the park with grandpa, he loved walking and riding his bike. I appreciated him for giving me his bike when he could no longer ride it. I love you Grandpa Steed.

I love you John! I remember how much fun we had dating, and how much I missed you while you spent two years in the army. We were so happy together as we married and had seven wonderful children together. You were so fun and sweet with our kids, and we did family parties and sang silly songs. I remember you dancing with the granddaughters in our living room. We also had some fun trips with Bob and Betty Jensen. We had sixty seven wonderful years together, I’m looking forward to being with you again.

Mr. Steed was my honors chemistry teacher when I was a sophomore at West High (1996 - 1997). It was his second-to-last year teaching, there. My good friend's dad had been Mr. Steed's student when he was at West decades before me.

I'm sorry to hear he's passed, but glad he lived such a full life.

Coincidentally, his fellow West High teacher (and hallmate the last few years he was there), Terry Ekberg passed away eight days before him.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family.  Your dad was always so kind!  I loved seeing him walk home from work with his briefcase and then listen to the ward and neighbor boys talk about their scouting adventures with him. I’m so sad to see John go. John was a wise and wonderful person and the best Father in-law in one could ever have.  The many summers working together doing everything from landscaping to remodeling old houses was some of the best times of my life, he taught me so much and we worked so well together it wasn’t like work at all. I also remember all the camping trips we went on with John & Joyce and my family were so much fun and such a part of my life, I will remember them always. My life will forever be changed with the loss of John and his journey is an inspiration to our family whose lives he touched so much.
