John Henry Steed passed away at his home on Thursday September 14, 2023, at the age of 91. He was born April 7, 1932, to Maurice Marion Steed and Thelma Electa Slack Steed in Pocatello Idaho. When he was twelve his family moved to a farm near Blackfoot, Idaho. John graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1951. He worked as a carpenter until enlisting in the army where he earned the rank of Sergeant 1st class.
John married Joyce Durrant on March 29, 1956, in the Idaho Falls temple. He graduated from Brigham Young University where he studied geology, chemistry, and physics. He started his teaching career in Blackfoot followed by 4 years at Bryant Jr High, then spent 33 years teaching at West High in Salt Lake City. He loved teaching and had the ability to make complicated subjects fun and engaging. In 1998 he retired and served a mission in Nigeria with his wife Joyce. Where he was able to share the gospel and immerse himself in the culture. He had the pleasure of holding many teaching callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and dedicated years to temple work (which was one of his happy places). He was Scout Master for several years being honored with The Silver Beaver award.
John was an avid outdoorsman and every moment spent in nature was an adventure. He was a camping all-star and relished in any opportunity to share his passion for nature with his family. Hiking with him meant never having to worry about being lost even though he managed to always end up off the beaten path. While hiking it seemed like the trees got in the way of what was really important, the geological formations. His bike had more miles than any car. If John couldn't be found it meant that he was out riding his bike. He made walking fun and trips with him to the neighborhood park were a regular occurrence, even before Pokémon Go.
John is survived by his wife Joyce, sons Dennis, (Rosemary), Michael, Paul (Amy); daughters Ann (Steve McVey), Barbara (Shawn Garrett), Julie (Marty Nichols), Christine (Ryan Paulsen); 20 grandchildren and, 12 great grandchildren.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Thelma; sisters, Alice Merrell, Lavila Robbins, Mary Penoyer; brothers, Robert Steed, Don Steed, and grandson Jackson Dale Steed.
An evening viewing will be held Wednesday September 20th from 6 to 8 p.m., the funeral service will take place at the Hyland Lake Ward Chapel, 981 Revere Circle, Murray, UT 84117, 11 a.m., with a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.. The internment will take place at Holladay Memorial Park, 4900 S Memory Lane, Salt Lake City, UT 84117.
