1927 ~ 2020
Our beloved mother Joyce slipped away Thursday afternoon, December 10, 2020, at the age of 93. She was born January 15, 1927, the second of six children of Milton and Marie Jones Barlow in Salt Lake City, Utah. She graduated from East High School, where she met Alfred Eugene (Gene) Smith in her senior year; they were later married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She graduated from the University of Utah in theatre and radio, starring memorably in Orson Welles’ production of MacBeth, alongside Roddy McDowall. After graduation she moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, hosting a talk-show for radio stations KTFI and KVMV. She loved the arts—theatre, music, drama, road shows, concerts, and productions. She produced and directed popular Broadway shows—The Music Man (cited in the Ensign), Fiddler on the Roof, and Hello Dolly, among many others.
Until the age of 91 she was chorister for the Ridgedale Ward, and served for decades as Choir Director, Drama Director and callings in Young Women, Sunday School, Activities, and Relief Society in her ward and the Grant Stake. Her Christmas and patriotic programs were legendary. She produced award-winning road shows for 25 years, acclaimed throughout the stake and the Salt Lake Valley. With Gene, they were a perfect showtime couple: Joyce produced and directed the shows; Gene, an accomplished pianist, arranged and played the music for endless rehearsals and then productions. She sang alto in the Mello-Tones, a touring quartet that performed throughout the region. She loved the cabin at Bear Lake and the family on the waterfront. She excelled for many years in a bowling league, which she agreed to do if Gene would agree to sit through the plays at Pioneer Memorial Theatre.
She was predeceased by her husband Gene, son Robert, her parents, sisters Arlene (Stan) Darger, Jeniel (Sam) Kalm, and Carole (Ray) Madsen, and brothers Clifton (Dorthy) Barlow and Earl (Sandy) Barlow. She is survived by three children, Gerald E. (Betsy) Smith, Sharon (Warren) Rappleye, Marilyn (John, deceased) Bertoch, eight grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. We would like to thank her caregivers, Rebecca, Heather and Britanee for their loving care of our mother.
She would always say, “I love life. I’d like to do it all again.”
