Kay was born on April 15, 1943 to Mildred and LeRoy Peterson of Welling, Alberta, Canada. He grew up helping on the family farm, raising cows, and growing wheat and other crops. He loved riding his Arabian horse “Hotski” to town and all over the farm and southern Alberta. As a young boy he attended a one room schoolhouse and graduated from Raymond High School. As a Boy Scout he enjoyed camping and exploring Alberta and Montana. This is when his deep love and appreciation began for the “great outdoors”.
After High School he served a full time LDS mission to the Canada Mission, in Toronto, Ontario. He was proud to serve his fellow Canadians in eastern Canada.
After returning from his mission he attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he met Kathleen McMullin. They were married in the Los Angeles LDS Temple. While they divorced later, they remained friends. Kay earned his bachelor’s degree and moved their growing family to California where he taught High School and Driver’s Education.
They eventually made their way back to Utah where Kay loved to go camping, 4 wheeling, and taking his girls to visit his parents and extended family in Canada. Kay loved showing his daughters his old stomping grounds. Taught them to drive on the gravel roads around the farm. Took them horseback riding, for rides in the combine and swimming in beaver pond. He loved showing them Waterton National Park as well.
Kay worked for Alpine School District for 14 years as a school bus driver. He often said that driving the ‘little darlings’ was his favorite job. Once retired he bought a Harley Davidson and hit the road with his motorcycle buddies, they had several fun adventures together touring Yellowstone, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, California and the Oregon Coast. These same buddies also had many 4 wheeling adventures throughout southern Utah and Colorado.
Kay loved spending time with his grandkids and visited them often in Texas. They did lots of fun things together, with frequent trips to Galveston, The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and Houston Astros baseball games.
He is survived by his 3 daughters; Kristi, Kimberli, and Kelli (Alex) and 2 grandkids, Ethan (14), and Abby (12). He was preceded in death by his loving parents and many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins, and granddaughter Amber Grace.
His daughters would like to thank the caring and compassionate teams at Encompass Home Health and Hospice and Bellaview Assisted Living Facility for caring for their dad during the last month of his life.
