Valiant and courageous, Lucile Mason Fetzer, 96, died peacefully in the early morning of December 11, 2016 at the Coventry of Cottonwood Heights. Born on September 27, 1920 to George Eli and Elizabeth Blackhurst Mason, she was the fourth of five children. Lucile graduated from East High School in 1937. She was 18 years old, attending a church dance, when she met John Baer Fetzer. He was immediately smitten and courted her with relentless charm. She was enchanted. They were married on March 12, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Lucile lived in Salt Lake City with her parents during World War II while John served four years as a Major in the Army Corp of Engineers Intelligence Division in England, France and Germany. She looked forward to his steady deliveries of red roses and Chanel No. 5. Their romance continued for 64 years, until John’s death in 2006.
Lucile worked at JC Penney, Utah Woolen Mills and was a Pink Lady volunteer at LDS Hospital, but her life was dedicated to being a wife and mother. A woman of myriad talents, she was a gourmet cook, world class seamstress and gracious hostess. She was also a fierce competitor, enjoying many years bowling with the University of Utah leagues with John, playing bridge with several clubs and remains the ruling queen of Tripoly and dominos. She was an elegant woman who enjoyed the days of hats, gloves and shopping at Auerbach’s and The Paris Co. As we gather again for Christmas, there will be Lucile’s clam dip, hamballs and Christmas Eve Coca Cola, our traditions. For the record, her unique chocolate chip cookies with maple frosting are second to none.
Lucile is survived by her three sons, David (Marsha), Jerry (Libby) and Craig; nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; sister Arlene Harmer (Bill); beloved nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband John, infant son Ronald, her parents, sisters Betty (Lewis) and Ferol (Ed) and brother Bill (Barbara).
We will celebrate Lucile’s long life on Saturday, December 17 at 11 am, with a visitation at 9:30 am at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 S 2300 E, Salt Lake City, UT. The family will hold a private burial.
