Our loving father, Lynn Dean, passed peacefully on March 17, 2022, at the age of 93. Lynn was born on January 27, 1929, to Ashbell David Dean and Birdie Ramsay Dean, of Salt Lake City, Utah, the third of four children.
Lynn attended Roosevelt Elementary, Granite Jr. High and Granite High School. Shortly after high school, he joined the Navy and was stationed at a San Diego Naval Air Station as part of a fire fighters group aiding downed aircraft. When he required facial surgery, he was sent to Bethesda, Maryland.
In Bethesda he met Dorothy June Wasilewski at a Y Cottage/USO dance. They married on February 6, 1952, and later moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. Lynn and “Dottie” had their first six children there. When work slowed, Lynn packed some tools in his truck and headed to Alaska. Several months later in 1963, Dottie took their 6 children and drove to Alaska to join Lynn for their new adventure. And what an adventure it was! On March 27, 1964 at 5:36pm they witnessed the greatest U.S. earthquake.
Lynn and Dottie were sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple June 10, 1966. Lynn enjoyed the beauty of Alaska and spent endless hours hunting, fishing, hiking and being a great scout master for years.
About 1978, Lynn put a deposit on a booth at the Alaska State Fair that eventually became Corndog Corner, known for corndogs, burgers, fries, and sodas. This booth continues to bring Lynn’s adult children, and now their children, to Alaska every summer to “work in the booth.” This heritage has been—and still is—a place of much fun and laughter (and also a lot of hard work).
Lynn also started his own drywall business many years ago, employing his sons, along with many other young men in his ward, as they worked to earn money for their missions.
Lynn had great adventures fishing, hunting with Dottie, his friends, and sons. He was involved in two hunting trips, where he and his friend’s boats capsized, one which left them stranded on a remote island in the Gulf of Alaska for 4 days. They were very lucky to be rescued.
In 1986, with just two sons left at home, Lynn and Dottie returned to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they purchased Lynn’s childhood home. Lynn served faithfully in several callings there, including Bishop, Transient Bishop, and Employment Specialist in Welfare Square. He and Dottie served a mission in the Canada, Toronto Mission in 2005.
His beloved bride passed away June 14, 2012. Lynn was living in William E. Christoffersen Veterans’ home at his time of passing. We would like to thank all of the wonderful staff there who took such great care of our father.
Lynn’s family will always remember his love, the values he instilled, and the great example he left for us to follow. We all love him so much.
He is survived by his children, David (Debbie) Dean, Mark (Jaelyn) Dean, Lynda Dean Carley, Gordon (Alice) Dean, Daniel (Beverly) Dean, Kristi (Steve) Mixon, James (Mindy) Dean, Charles (Tonya) Dean, and Patrick Dean, as well as many, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ashbell David and Birdie Dean, his brothers Howard (Norma) Dean, Norman (Yvonne “Bonnie”) Dean, and his sister Betty (Garland Percival “Johnnie” Johnson).
