Our loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Mable Green Hammond, passed away peacefully at her home Friday afternoon, January 30, 2015. She was surrounded by her daughters, grandchildren, friends, and loving caretakers in the last days and weeks of her passing.
Mable was born March 31, 1930 in Salt Lake City, the fifth of six daughters, to Leo E. & Leah Elliott Green. She graduated from South High School.
Mable married Herald Dilworth Hammond, the love of her life, on March 12, 1947 and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple October 23, 1951. Together, they shared 55 years raising eight daughters. Mom has missed Dad every day since his passing.
Our mother fulfilled countless roles in her life. In particular, she supported her husband, Herald, during his schooling, as well as during the creation of Twirl Town Toys from the basement of their home, and then later, Western Toy and Hobby. She loved her extensive doll collection, which grew as they travelled throughout the world together.
Mable was an active member of the LDS Church and served faithfully in her numerous callings. She spent several years “temple hopping” with her daughters as an extension to the vast work of genealogy she had done over the years. Her primary concern was and continues to be for the well-being of her daughters and grandchildren.
Mom’s greatest joy came from being with those she loved. Though afraid of water, she still ventured on every boating trip to be with her family. And she welcomed all into that group whether by birth, adoption or marriage establishing many traditions to bring them all together several times a year.
She was a shining example of generosity and kindness. Her charitable nature will be remembered by many for the service she gave to others. She loved and served her friends as well as strangers, undertaking financially, missions, college educations, and many other expenses for those in need.
As an avid reader, Mom kept good books by her side and vocally professed her testimony of the Savior and His gospel. She was a peacemaker and a gifted listener, talents which she necessarily developed and honed as the mother of eight girls.
Mable is survived by her daughters, Nancy (Gary) Kehl, Jody (Rob) Morgan, Carolyn (Stephen) Weiss, Cary (Steve) Fullerton, Tammy Hammond, Jerilyn (Mike) Brown, Heidi (Randall) Wolf; one sister, Leah Rae (Allen) Bastow; 61 grandchildren; and 95 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Herald; daughter, Charlotte; her parents and four sisters, Leona, Vera, Lillie, & Myrl; and, one grandchild, Chad Morgan; and 5 great grandchildren.
A special thanks to the caregivers who lovingly cared for giving the care to our Mother over the past few years.
