Born in Salt Lake City on March 22, 1949, Martin (Marty) Lynn Madill was the only child of Margret Ethel Martin and Walter Thomas Madill. Though he lived his early years in Salt Lake, Marty’s true roots were in the soils of rural Montana working the land of Hillside Farm with his parents. His keen independence, which he insisted came from the mother he loved so dearly, would first carry him into home building and eventually to the largest mining operations in the West through his entrepreneurial creation: M&M Concrete Pumping. While known for his penchant for hard work, Marty also knew the importance of slowing down. And no time away was more prized than weeks, sometimes months on his boat, the Ethel M, in Harbor Island, San Diego. Beyond boats, his passions included the Beach Boys, fast cars, and Tommy Bahamas matched to any number of his favorite loafers or boat shoes. He was often happiest with a spatula in one hand, whiskey in the other, delighting the ones he loved with his grilling and culinary talents. His full character, which made easy work of winning friends, was second only to his tender heart, best exemplified by his love and devoted care for his sweet companion, ReNae, amid so many years of challenging health. That devotion shined each year as ReNae’s love of Christmas lights drove him to increasingly creative ways to add to the display, trying it seemed to always outpace the lights on Temple Square. That same tender and devoted heart was a hallmark known by everyone within reach of his goodness and love. Though he never would have said so himself, that goodness and love made his life a beautiful expression of the delicate art of living beyond beginnings.
Marty is survived by sons, Bret Roberts (wife Greta), DeWin Madill (wife Rochelle), and Chris Madill (wife Mandy). He is also survived by grandchildren Brittnee, Noah, Jack, Brody, Zoe, Charley, Chase, Blake, McKenzie, and Micah and his sister Lona. He was preceded in death by his parents Ethel and Walt, his brother, Ron, and his loving and devoted spouse of 40 years, ReNae.
