

Ruth (Ruthy) Lewy is survived by her two children, Dr. Vered Lewy-Weiss (James) and Joseph Lewy (Lori), and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Rafael Lewy, her daughter, Daphna Lewy-Rivera, and grandson, Benjamin Weiss. Ruthy was born in Haifa, Israel, in 1943. Her parents were Polish immigrants who escaped the Holocaust. Ruthy was an accomplished concert pianist. She performed in front of audiences throughout Israel. Her passion for education led Ruthy to the Hebrew University in Jerusalem where she studied to become a teacher of Jewish history and Hebrew. Ruthy married the love of her life, Rafael (Rafi), three months after they met in 1965. Following the birth of their first child, Vered, they immigrated to the United States, where Rafi commenced his US academic career. Ruthy and he would later welcome their two other children, Joseph and Daphna. While living in Grand Forks, N.D., with her family in the early 1970's, Ruthy started a Jewish History and Hebrew education program for grade-school students. She was a beloved teacher and principal. In 1977, Rafi brought Ruthy and their children to Salt Lake City, UT. Ruthy taught Hebrew at Congregation Kol Ami for some years before retiring to focus on family. Ruthy was a loving wife, proud mother and grandmother, and a great friend to many. She was also well-known for her love of baking, reading, music. She is deeply missed by her family and friends. Rabbi Benny Zippel will conduct a graveside service on Monday, January 20, 2025, 10:00 AM at the Shaare Tzedek Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Rafi, and youngest child, Daphna.
