I was born in Preston, Idaho to G. Stanley and Emily Wallentine Brewer. Near my first birthday we moved to Ogden, Utah where I attended schools, including Ogden High and Weber College.
At the tender age of seven, Dad sat me down, explained that most men were away fighting a war and that he needed me to work in his grocery store. I learned to bag beans and rice, carry groceries to customers' cars, and deliver to businesses and apartments on Ogden's infamous 25th Street just a block south of the store. Working in the family grocery store shaped my career and my life.
I served an LDS mission in beautiful Australia, then found an apartment in Salt Lake, attended the U. of U. and began part-time work at Associated Food Stores, Inc.-resulting in a 40 year career. I loved almost every day at Associated and often said I liked Mondays better than Fridays.
On August 1, 1960 I married Diane Rose from Tremonton, UT, in the Logan LDS Temple and together we raised four wonderful children who have given us a dozen beautiful, fun and loving grandchildren. More than anything else, I will miss Diane and sons: Dee (Portia Snow), Douglas R (Heidi), John-david (Jenn) and daughter: Jennifer (Rich Israelsen). I have four sisters and a brother who, with their spouses, are dear to me: June and George Bell (both deceased), Maralyn and Frank Johnson, Beverly and Jack (deceased) Cope, Douglas G. and Linda Brewer and Kathryn and Thomas Kimble.
I was, during most of my life, active in the LDS Church, having served in priesthood and auxiliary presidencies, a bishopric, and as executive secretary to two stake presidents and three bishops. Diane and I had the privilege of serving a mission together in Bar Harbor, Maine and cherish the friends we made there. We also served in the Salt Lake Temple together for many years.
My cancer was diagnosed in late 1997. I have had good doctors who have become good friends and only after 15 years have I conceded the battle with cancer. I deeply appreciate the caring of those that stood at the battle lines with me: my loving wife, Drs. Harmon, Rigby, Thomson, Frame, Johnson and Miller, and the staff of Curo Hospice.
Many years ago I made friends with God. I have grown close to His Son, Jesus Christ. He is my Savior and because of Him I will await my family in the hereafter.
