Susan was born on October 8, 1940, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Clarence Collins Bush and Frankie May Ashbrook. She grew up with a love for learning and graduated from South High School in 1958. On September 22, 1959, she married her eternal companion, Gary Reeve Norman, in the Manti Utah Temple. Together they shared a devoted and loving marriage for 53 years until Gary’s passing in 2013.
Education was a lifelong pursuit for Susan. While raising her children, she continued her studies at Brigham Young University. Through dedication and perseverance, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from BYU in 1991. She went on to share her love of music and learning as an orchestra teacher in the Jordan School District for many years, touching the lives of countless students.
Music was at the heart of Susan’s life. A gifted violinist, she played throughout her life and found great joy in performing and teaching. She gave violin lessons to many and nurtured a deep love of music within her home. In her later years, she continued her passion for music as she played violin for the BYU New Horizons Orchestra.
Susan and Gary built a life filled with love, faith, and adventure. Together, they lived in many places and were blessed to travel throughout the world - especially as Gary worked for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake. They served four LDS missions in the Inner-City (Pioneer Stake) and the Addiction Recovery Program. After Gary’s passing, Susan continued her mission service in Family History and BYU Pathway.
Above all, Susan’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted and loving mother to her ten children: Douglas (Bonnie), Russell (Jan), Wendi (Keith) Hillman, Lauri (Steve) Redd, Nancy (Kirt) Poulsen, Patricia (David) Johnson, Karen (Steve) Edwards, Andrea (Bret) Iverson, Deanna (Bryan) Jensen, and Richard (Stephanie). Her legacy continues through her 40 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, each of whom she loved dearly.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and sister, Nancy Bush. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gary; her three grandchildren, Kylee, Lizzie and Luke; her son-in-law, Steve Redd; and her parents.
Susan will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her gentle strength, her love of music, and her deep devotion to her family. Her life was a beautiful example of service, perseverance, and love.
