William Stewart Monson, our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2016, in Taylorsville, Utah. He lived a full and wonderful 93 years, but looked forward to a joyous reunion with his dear wife.
Bill, born December 22, 1922 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Laurence Christian Monson and Cornelia Diana Fife, was the fifth of seven children. He grew up in the Avenues area, attending Wasatch Elementary, Bryant Junior High, and graduating from East High. Although growing up during the Depression, he had a wonderful youth, roaming the hills north of the “U”, spending summers in the family orchards in Butlerville (now Cottonwood Heights), having a great time with wonderful friends of the 27th ward and hi-jinks with his older brother, Dan.
Bill served in World War II in the Army Air Corps (now Air Force) with the Eighth Air Force, stationed in Rattlesden, England. Although he served on the ground, he loved the B-17’s stationed at his base, which ignited a life-long love of aviation. He earned his pilot’s license after the war and loved flying.
He went to work for the Federal Government and spent the majority of his career working at the Salt Lake’s Veteran’s Administration Hospital working with patient services and admissions until his retirement.
He married Carroll Louise Peterson, his sweetheart, on March 7, 1953, and was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on September 8, 1961. Bill and Carroll loved traveling, working in the yard, and doing most things together. Carroll preceded him in death November 16, 2010. They were blessed with one child, their daughter Karen.
They lived in the Rose Park area for over 40 years and have lived in Murray for the last 16 years.
Bill was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving faithfully in many positions.
Dad loved being with his family and serving them. (How many men would spend every Saturday and holiday for four years helping their son-in-law build a huge addition on their house?) In later years, Sunday was his favorite day of the week when he would spend the day with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bill is preceded in death by his sweet wife, Carroll, his parents, siblings: Laurence (Jeanne), Joe (Anita), Elaine (Ray)Habenicht, Dan (Julie), and Ruth (Jack)Haun. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Randy Haslam, grandchildren Brett, Heather (Jake) Hulse, Trent, and Clark Haslam, Great-grandsons, Ethan and Henry Hulse and one sister Carolyn (John) Neal, and other extended family.
Services will be held Monday, May 16th at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Chapel, with the viewing at 10:00 a.m. and funeral at 11:00 a.m.
