Shirley Melanie Romer passed peacefully on March 3, 2026, with her devoted son, Max, by her side. She is now reunited with her beloved husband, Robert, who passed before her. Their love story began in the village of Port Jefferson, where they first met, and together they shared 42 years of marriage filled with love.
Shirley was known by those who loved her best as creative, kind, brave, loving, compassionate, adventurous, and patient. She lived her life with a gentle strength and a generous spirit, always willing to stand up for what she believed in while showing deep care and understanding for others. Shirley often told stories about growing up in Niagara Falls, and truly loved her life on Long Island. She loved going to the Montauk Lighthouse and vacationing there with her family.
She leaves behind her beloved son, Max Romer (Sarah), and her cherished grandchildren, Lauren and Holly, who brought her immense pride and joy.
She is also survived by her sister, Phyllis Parkinson-Snow (Larry), and her brother-in-law Paul (Elexis). Shirley was predeceased by her siblings Henry, Louie, and Carol. She is lovingly remembered by her nieces Alyssa, Krista, and Denise, and her nephews Johnny, Louis, Henry, and David. She was also predeceased by her niece Dawn.
Shirley dedicated many years of her life as a teacher with the Riverhead Central School District, where she inspired countless students with her creativity and passion for learning. She was especially proud of creating the Chinese New Year program at Reilly Avenue School, a reflection of her imaginative spirit and dedication to enriching the lives of her students by introducing them to a different culture.
Outside of the classroom, Shirley found joy in photography, Tai Chi, swimming, art, and spending time at the beach. She also found great comfort and peace visiting the Our Lady of the Island Shrine in Eastport. Shirley cherished the companionship of her pets: Rulie, Lucky, Hugo, and Kemosabe.
Above all, Shirley loved her family deeply. She was a faithful person with a warm heart, a patient soul, and a courageous spirit. A truly unique woman, she balanced kindness with quiet strength and lived her life guided by love—especially the endless love she had for her son and his family.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
