My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Shanley family.  Terry was a wonderful man always had a smile on his face.  I worked at Fox Lane and my girls attended the high school. The staff as well as the student body loved and respected him.  Terry will be missed by many.  Rest in peace my friend.

With deepest sympathy I am sorry for your loss. Terry impacted me in my senior year of high school and was never to be forgotten. After 50 years we reconnected and, I was glad that we did. I remember him as being sweet and jovial each day. I will miss him.

I was a student and part of the track team coached by Terry at Fox Lane in the early 80s.  We reconnected several years ago and would chat on FB with texts to each other remembering the old days.  We became quick friends and I always  I felt comfortable just being myself.  Always such a great sense of humor.   Just last month I hadn't heard from him and started to worry.  I found his obituary and am so very sorry to all that he touched.  To all of his extended family, cherish those wonderful memories and know he is with you always.   Warm regards~

Linda & Family: Terry (always Coach Shanley or "Shan the Man" in our house) was a huge figure in my life and for my two brothers, when we were students at Fox Lane in the 1990's.  He coached us all on the track & field team, and was a steady source of quotable wisdom, laughter, and lifelong lessons.  

I spent 16 years as a high school English teacher and cross country & track coach, and I have Shan to thank for inspiring me toward that work.  

He made a difference in so many people's lives, the ultimate indicator of a great teacher.  I hope he now rests in peace, and I will always think of him when I set foot on a 400m oval.

I wish to express my sincere condolences to the Shanley family.  “Shan The Man” was one of my favorite teachers and coaches at Fox Lane HS. He was very compassionate and thoughtful.  His unique gregariousness afforded him the ability to reach through certain personality barriers where others could not. I know this first hand.  I sincerely was thinking of him recently and Coach Fio as I prepared for a 5k charity run. This “old”, damaged, retired police Lieutenant managed a time of  23:10 while injured.  Never stop reaching for your best… He was one “mentor” who conveyed that to me.

Terry was the best teacher I ever had. The honor of being a student of his his, is a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life. He made learning a delight (humor, mischievousness and the patience of a saint)!  I can still quote passages we memorized for him. He was truly one of a kind.  My heartfelt condolences go to his wife, children and their spouses, and his grandchildren. I can't imagine the loss you must feel. With time I hope your will enjoy (and laugh) at some of your favorite memories.

Terry was my wonderful high school teacher and warm, thoughtful and kind friend. He was a unique individual who deeply cared about everyone and touched the hearts of many, making everyone feel special. He never failed to praise, inspire and lift my spirits in his wonderfully witty and inimitable way. He always asked if he made me smile and he did invariably. The world is diminished without his singular presence. Terry was an exceptional human being and I will miss him dearly.

To the family of Terry, I am so sorry for your loss. As the mother of Jessica Falco, a 2001 graduate of FLHS, I can not say enough about the positive impact Terry had on Jessica during her very formative high school years. Through track, Terry molded a girl into a young women, instilling in my daughter leadership skills that Jessica continues to use to this day. Travelling to Nationals twice, one with Natalie  Whelan and a second time with Caitlin Fennessey promoted independence and confidence in a developing teenager. Jessica's time training with Terry was transformational for Jessica. Under the tutelage of Terry to work hard to achieve a goal, to look for opportunities whether running or in life,  to create opportunity when none seem to be around were all life skills that Terry promoted. Terry assisted Jessica in dealing  with difficulties such as a serious ankle injury the fall of her senior year as she was preparing for states in cross country. Terry was a gem of a person, and a person that I am fortunate to have known, though for a short period of time.  It saddens me that I had not reached out to Terry over these almost 20 years to say THANK YOU. To Terry's family  I send hugs and a hope that you will seek solace in the many happy memories of your time with Terry.  Vivian Falco

I am very sorry for your loss.  I taught with him at Rice H.S. in Manhattan.  He was always very positive in his outlook and well liked by the staff and the students.  I could tell that he would be a great teacher.

I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Shanley. They say you have teachers that influence you and leave a fond mark that stays with you and he was one of mine. His kindness and genuine caring about me is something I have and never will forget. I was so happy to reconnect with him on Facebook - my love & condolences to his family , the world has lost a beautiful man .

Mr Shanley was my absolute favorite and most memorable teacher at Fox Lane.  He so clearly cared about his students.  I’ll always remember how my mom told me that Shanley told her during a parent-teacher conference that I perfectly captured the essence of Holden Caulfield in a creative writing assignment.  A small thing maybe at the time, but in retrospect the specificity  gave me so much confidence going forward in what ultimately became my career (communications).  Shan also let me participate in winter track my junior year to fill out a college resume that was woefully short on extracurriculars even though I surely didn’t help with the results for the team.  So in remembering him, I will think about how all the small things Shan did (for me and countless others)  he had an outsized impact on my life.

Rest in Peace, Terry. I've known you since our days in the Juniorate in Lakewood, NJ in 1960. You were always a fun-loving guy. I remember vividly our experiences in South Kortright, NY in 1962-1963. My deepest sympathy I extend to your family, and most especially to your brother Brian. May God bless and protect them, and hold them in the palm of his hand. God bless!

Terry was one of my closest friends during years in Kortright, Lakewood , and Iona and what a wonderful friend he was.  He might have even been a “PF”!   Funny, humble, generous and a pretty darn good athlete!    My sympathies go out to his family.

I first met and lived with Terry in 1991 at St Gab’s in Lakewood NJ.  He a “big time senior” and me a freshman’slave’. It wa a great year.  I will always remember his perpetual “laugh-smile”.  Other stories must remain untold in the pine tree woods of Lakewood. May his soul and all the souls of the departed find eternal peace

My condolences to Mrs. Shanley, Scott, Melanie and Mr. Shanley's beautiful grandchildren, extended family and friends. While I didn't have Shan the Man as a teacher, he was a big part of my childhood and an AMAZING family man!!!!!! In a world where people often tackle their jobs to collect paychecks, he was a passionate teacher. He was excited to helps kids learn and grow and looked forward to making a difference in their lives. Teaching and running  were special to him, but nothing made his life more full than his beloved family. I haven't seen Shan in many years, but he will surely be missed.  XO

I transferred into ShanMan’s class a month into the school year and immediately knew I was in the right place. His belief in his students was infectious and his love of teaching evident in all he did! He was a gift to FLHS and will be remembered among the greats! I will never forget what Terry said to me when I started as a new English teacher at Fox Lane.  One morning as we walked down the hall to class he asked me: “Do you believe in guardian angels?”  I told him I did.  Then he said, “Good, because I’m yours.”  

He was my guardian angel during a time when I needed a friend and mentor.  I will always be grateful for his kindness, genuineness, sense of humor and his ability to connect with those around him.   I learned so much from the way he befriended people and used laughter as a lubricant of life.  

I’m so grateful to have known Terry and for the ways he blessed me.  My deepest condolences to you at this time.

Mr. Shanley (Shane as we called him my year because of the book), was a wonderful teacher and a tremendous person who always made you smile especially when you weren’t. I will miss him. Condolences to the family, he was greatly loved.

Coach Stanley taught me a lot in and out of the classroom.  Even today I look back on those days with joy and gratitude.  A good man he was, and I’ll never forget his positive influence.

Thinking of Mr. Shanley has always brought a smile to my lips   He was an extraordinarily patient and gifted educator. He had a great gift which enabled him to see through the obnoxiousness of adolescence;  identify each student’s unique strength and  then instill passion. For some it was reading. For some it was running. For some both. I never got a hang of the grammar thing - so forgive me sir for this choppy paragraph and punctuation . May you rest in peace and your loved ones feel the warm embrace of how many lives you touched.

I am so sorry to hear or Mr Shanley's passing. He was a good teacher in my 10th grade English class at Fox Lane when I was being a real jerk. He was patient with me as a stupid teenager and for that I will forever be grateful.  He told me to leave class because I was so disruptive, and yet he took me back with kind understanding.  It takes courage and dedication to work with adolescents, and he had both of those qualities. I am sorry for my behavior in class and it still sticks with me after 45 years. May God bless him in heaven and bless all of his family as they mourn the loss of one so dear.

Coach Shan/ Shan The Man was so much
More than a teacher and a coach!! He was one of my biggest cheerleader, my staunchest supporter!! He believed in me, when almost no one else did! He motivated me!! His guidance, words of wisdom and nuggets of truth is the reason I’m Dr. Marla Reid today!! Such an amazing person!!

Ireland 2019…..Mostly Gevlins but made into a better trip when Terry and Linda joined us as we toured around Ireland and Terry  ran around Cork city.  A wonderful memory..

What a wonderful human being Terry was and a master humorist. He was beloved (still is) by the Koloski and West family. My deepest condolences to Linda and the rest of the family. 😇🫶

Mr. Shanley gave me my only C ever.  And he was my favorite teacher.  This is hard to pull off.  I had no business being in his honors English class and he never let me forget it.  But his style, energy, and kindness always made me happy to be there.

Today's news was hard to hear.  He's going to be missed by more people than I'll ever know.  But in the interest of annoying him one last time: Shanley, your going 2 b missed :).  Thanks for everything.

"Shan the man" was a national treasure, bringing joy and laughter everywhere he went. I feel honored to have met and known him through Jim Mitchell.  I never met a coach of another team as supportive of ours as Shanley was. His passing is an incredible loss to a world in much need of more kindness. My sincerest condolences and sympathies to Linda, his family, and all who knew him. He will be missed beyond measure. (Here he is celebrating his good friend, Jim Mitchell's  30th anniversary of coaching at Bronxville. He never failed to find happiness in the success of others.)

Shanley was human treasure beyond description.  

I feel honored to have known him.  

And  to have witnessed, up close, his unique brand of human kindness.

Mr Shanley was the most beloved teacher at Fox Lane. He taught with humor and kindness that it made even the most disengaged student want to go to his class. I still remember the jokes he’d make. A favorite being:  “did you get that shirt at the zoo?” “It has lions”. 

He made everyone feel like they were his favorite. And somehow got us all to read the classics. And even though I complained the entire time he made us read Ivanhoe; I did end up majoring in English Literature in college. 

Any time he’d run into my Dad they would talk fondly about their Iona days since they were both alums.  

My sincere condolences to the Shanley family. Thank you for sharing him with the Fox Lane Community.

Terry, I cannot believe you are gone. I will forever remember our runs on Succabone road and our chats about life. You always made me laugh as we ran. Mr. Shanley was one of the most influential people in my life. He was the person who made me truly fall in love with classic literature. Even 20+ years after having him as a teacher, we were still in contact and discussed Dickens, Brontë, Shakespeare and the lot. He inspired me to become a high school English teacher. I now teach many of the books he taught me and am proud to carry on his legacy. Hey Nonny, Nonny!

My heart is breaking as I read about Terry. He was not only my English teacher at Halsted School, but also my friend. He was truly a special person who always believed in me during high school... Sending my deepest condolences to Linda, Scott, Melanie, and the entire family. As Shan would say, "you are my star"... He really was "MY star". RIP ❤️

Coach Shanley, shan the man, I will never forget you.  Even when I sucked at running and English, you taught me to keep trying. You led with laughter,  love and a bunch of corny jokes, not to mention Car Talk. Through your stories of running amd races, you inspired me to try a marathon. I did, and I loved it.  I thought of you. I kept running,  for decades now, and I'm trying my hand at a 100miler. Had you not encouraged me when I was young, I'd never truly know the transformative power of running.

You will forever be in my heart.

You both had become friends to our family over the past decade, and it was so lovely to spend time with you by the pool getting to chat about life. 

Terry- you were such a great guy and it was always so interesting to hear about your journey in life as an english teacher and I myself (Jess) always loved to get book recommendations from you because I knew whatever you recommended would be a great read. I'll never forget our conversations and will always treasure them.

My deepest sympathy to the entire family for the loss of the this iconic man. He was my track coach freshman year as well as my English teacher. He was always "jogging"up and down the classroom as he taught, and I always found it amusing. As his student and member of his team, he was so funny and warm to all of his kids. I remember one time I was being alittle disruptive in class and he smiled at me and held up his hand with his fingers spread. That meant 5 extra laps at practice that afternoon. You will be extraordinarily missed Mr. Stanley.
