Born on January 17, 1944, in St. Paul, Minnesota, Carol grew up surrounded by family, faith, and a strong sense of purpose. She graduated from Wilson High School before earning her B.S. degree in Business Education from Mankato State College in 1966. While at Mankato, she met the love of her life, Gary Mitzner. The two were married on June 17, 1967, at Knox Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, beginning a partnership full of love, laughter, and shared adventure. Their journey took them to Utica, New York, back to St. Paul, and eventually to Santa Clarita, California, where they settled in 1969.
Dedicated to education, Carol devoted 33 years to teaching Business Education at both the high school and college levels. She earned her M.A. in Business Education with Honors from California State University, Los Angeles, in 1979, and in 1993 was recognized as one of just ten secondary teachers in Los Angeles County to receive the Teacher of the Year award — a testament to her excellence in the classroom and the countless lives she touched.
In 2003, Carol and Gary retired to Sequim, Washington, where she found joy in community and faith. A devoted Christian, she was an active member of Sequim Community Church, and loved worshiping and attending Bible study. Her faith carried her through life’s challenges, including several battles with cancer over the past 19 years. She passed away cancer-free, giving all glory and gratitude to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Carol found joy in simple pleasures — knitting and crocheting (often while traveling, which meant she was not “backseat driving” while Gary was at the wheel) — and she treasured her time with her beloved Red Hat friends. Just a day before her passing, she enjoyed lunch and laughter with them, sharing how grateful she was for their friendship.
Carol is survived by her husband Gary Mitzner of 58 years; sister Joan Domian of St. Paul, MN; nephew Arik (Jolene) Domian and great-nieces Charlee and Callie of Afton, MN; and nephew Adam (Jack) Domian of Germantown, NY. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Joan Baack and nieces and nephews Kelley Schallert, Kraig Mitzner, Karen Mitzner, Jon Mitzner, Kay Mitzner, Joy McKenzie, Pam Kirk, and Kimberly Lunsford.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Marjory; her brothers, Jim and Gary; and her sister-in-law, Gretchen.
Carol’s love for her family was constant, and her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She will be remembered for her warmth, strength, steadfast faith, and the quiet joy she brought to everyone around her. Carol lived a life of love, purpose, and grace — and leaves behind a legacy of kindness that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
A funeral service for Carol will be held on Monday, October 27, 2025 at 11 am at Sunset Kapala Glodek Funeral Home, 2250 St. Anthony Blvd. in Minneapolis, MN, followed by interment at Sunset Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior, starting at 10 am.
