With deep love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of a man whose joy, humor, and unmistakable charm left a mark on everyone who knew him. A devoted husband for 54 beautiful years, he cherished his wife Rita with a quiet steadiness that inspired everyone around them. Together they built a family he adored—three children who were his pride, and six grandchildren who lit up his world.
Larry had a soundtrack to his life, and it played straight from the 1950s and ’60s. Elvis, Ricky Nelson, Buddy Holly, and Fabian were just some of the many artists he enjoyed but they weren’t just artists to him—they were companions, memories, and the heartbeat of his happiest moments. Karaoke nights were his stage, and he never missed a chance to bring Elvis back to life. With a hip shake that could still make people laugh and a lip curl that was downright uncanny, he filled rooms with music, laughter, and a little bit of rock ’n’ roll magic.
Larry had a special place in his heart for little dogs; over the years he shared his life with many loyal companions. They were a constant source of joy, comfort, and love, and he cared for them with the same warmth he gave to everyone in his life.
An avid golf lover, Larry found peace and happiness on the course, enjoying the game as much for the quiet moments as for the competition. At home, he could often be found cheering on his favorite teams—the Minnesota Vikings and Timberwolves. Game days brought him excitement, hope, and plenty of spirited conversation.
Charming by nature, Larry had a gift for making people smile. Whether through a kind word, a joke, or simply his presence, he left others feeling lighter and happier. He will be remembered for his warmth, his love of music, his devotion to his dogs, and the gentle way he connected with people.
He leaves behind a legacy of smiles, melodies, loyal companionship, and unforgettable moments that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Larry is survived by his wife, Rita; children, Lisa (Todd) Ranstrom, Ryan (Alyssa) Nelson and Erik Nelson; grandchildren, Dillon, Colton, Gabbi, Evelyn, Paulo and Tiago; sister, Renee Nelson; brother, Gene Nelson.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Randy Nelson; parents, Marvin and Melba Nelson.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at Willows Bend Senior Living, 6455 University Ave NE, Fridley, MN 55432 starting at 2:00 pm.
