Michael James Lonergan, a true Eagle Scout, devoted father, proud “Pops,” and lifelong Minnesota Vikings fan, passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at the age of 80, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by love and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Mike found his greatest joy in life’s simple pleasures: early mornings fishing at the cabin on Bay Lake, the discipline and determination required to run marathons, and—above all—time spent with his two daughters and grandchildren. Whether casting a line at the lake, logging miles on the road, or cheering from the sidelines with a smile, he approached life with quiet strength, dedication, and heart.
After spending most of his life in the Twin Cities, Mike moved to Arizona for the final six years of his life. There, he was “living his best life,” as he often said—driving his convertible, soaking up the sunshine, hiking in the desert, and exploring all the beauty the state had to offer.
Even throughout his illness, Mike remained resilient and deeply connected to his daughters and grandchildren, who brought him endless joy and purpose. He faced each day with grace, strength, and unwavering determination, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who walked alongside him during that time.
He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Lonergan and Michelle Davis (Andy); and his beloved grandchildren, Jackson and Adelle Davis; and his sisters, Ruth Peterson and Debbie (David) Paquette; He is preceded in death by his father, James Louis Lonergan; his mother, Harriet Adelle Lonergan; and his sister, Patricia Carter.
A celebration of life will be held from 1-4 PM on April 18, 2026 at the Gold Nugget, 14401 Excelsior Boulevard in Minnetonka.
Michael will be laid to rest at Sunset Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.
