Carol, I love the way you have  displayed all those photos of Peter. They make more vivid my memories of Peter on visits through the years, from his ranking at the top as Cutest Little Kid to his current and permanent ranking at the top as Nicest Guy.

One of my most vivid memories of him as a little kid was way back when he was perhaps only four or five. He held a tiny open-jawed plastic tyrannosaurus against a nearby thigh (not his thigh) and gently but firmly commanded BITE. That little enactment won great laughter and pleasure at the time, and was often retold and sometimes re-enacted through the years thereafter, always bringing laughter and pleasure. I think that even way back then, Peter was giving us an early and most memorable demonstration of the same creative imagination so evident in his recent drawings, paintings, and other art.

I remember a time, more than a decade ago, when I phoned from afar for Loren or you. Peter answered and was there alone. He must have been just over 20, had not seen me for who knows how many years, never for longer than a short visit. For most kids that age, conversing with somebody that distant and nearly 40 years older would not even be on the list. But Peter was a nicer person. He conversed with me for over half an hour. I have no idea what we discussed. What I remember is Peter, who was nicer than almost anyone, to everyone.

My most recent memory of seeing him was on a visit to your home, my most recent visit I think, several years ago. We had just finished one of your feasts, all sitting around you feast table talking and laughing. And Peter got up and began to clear and rinse the dishes. I looked at him, shocked. A MAN, stepping up at that time to do THAT job? -- being that nice and thoughtful? That was Peter, being incomprehensibly thoughtful and nice.

Peter will be remembered.

Carol- What a wonderful service for Peter. The people who spoke from their hearts created a such a special tribute to Peter and your whole family.  And all of us who attended were moved by how Peter touched so many people's lives in so many ways.  He was loved and will be remembered.  I hope you can hold onto that during these difficult times.

Dear Carol, how very sad I am to hear about your great loss.  I am so thankful that I got to see Peter again at Jason's wedding a year and a half ago.  I had not seen him in many, many years, but there was an instant connection and ease when we reunited.  We talked a lot about my memories of him and you and his dad.  He was so very interested in the Massachusette family and wanted me to share all my memories.  It was like meeting his dad again, who was also gone too young, but left such an impression in my mind and heart.  I loved Peter's mischievious smile, sparkel in his eye and great humor.  I later sent him a picture from my wedding when he and Jason were very, very young, maybe about 4 years old, and then a recent one from Jason's wedding.  He remembered the wedding, or at least the stories, of how he ate all the cake he could get his hands on since sugar was limited by you!  He kept in touch after that and we emailed a bit, shared his artwork with me.  It was like reconnecting with an old friend.  I am blessed to have had the limited contact I had with him. Peter was one of the brightest, most witty personalities I have encountered. I miss him and do cherish all memories. He is in a better place. My condolences to his family.

Carol, we are deeply saddened by the news. Though the times we shared together were far too infrequent, I will forever hold Peter, and his vivid reflection of his parents, in my fondest memories.

Dear Carol, I met Peter only briefly when he was very young, but I feel I knew him well thanks to years of loving and heart-filled stories from Wally. I learned of all his ups and downs, his triumphs and struggles. And you were an integral part of all those stories, as the most loving and supportive mother anyone could ever wish for. Wally just called to tell me about the beautiful memorial service, with all the moving tributes from so many people whose lives Peter touched. I am so sorry I could not be there, but I was certainly there in spirit. May the coming days and weeks and months be a time of healing for you. I know you are surrounded by people who love you and who loved Peter. I send you my deepest sympathy on the loss of this young man whose presence made a small corner of this world that much brighter.

So many great times with Pete.  He always had a smile on his face and always could make you laugh until it hurt.  He was always a true friend.  I am so sorry for your great loss.  My thougths and prayers for you and your family.

There are people on this planet whom you cross paths with for only a short spell, but you never forget because they see things differently than everyone else.  They have an inexplicable spark in their eye that promises to reveal some secret no one else has the good fortune of knowing.  They burn bright.  That was Peter.  Sweet. Sensitive. Artistically inclined with a philosophical mind. Crazy. Cool. And wickedly funny with a sharp tongue. Troubled and mischievous. Kind hearted and far too young to be gone from this world. Rest in peace, Peter!

I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death.  They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make.  Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories.  We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love.
