"Son", "Brother", "Husband", "Father", "Uncle", "Companion", and "Friend" - Mike will be remembered as all of these things. Mike was born to Peter and Rose Hawley in London, England, on March 12th, 1948. He joined his older brother, Alan, and they all lived in London for 27 years until Mike moved to Slough in September, 1974, where he then married Martina in May of 1975. In the Fall of 1979, Mike and Martina returned to live in London as they were expecting their first child. Alan was born on March 11th, 1980, despite Mike's best attempts at delaying Martina's labour so that Alan could be born on his birthdate of March 12th.
Martina became a stay at home Mum, and Mike commuted from Fulham in London, to Heathrow Airport daily where he worked. Martina and Mike were blessed with a second son, Simon, on February 8th, 1984. In 1986, the family relocated to Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. They lived there until immigrating to Canada in July of 1989, settling in Mission, British Columbia.
He began his working life as a Purchasing Officer for Harvey's Nichols in London, and then moved to become a Purchasing Officer with Pan Amercian World Airways, at Heathrow. After moving to Canada, he began working with Canadian Airlines and then with Air Canada, until his early retirement. However, his favorite job was his often talked about "acting stint" for a one day role as a movie extra in Bray, Ireland, where he got paid to drink Guinness all day.
Mike's number one passion was football (soccer) and as a young boy he had always wanted to be a professional player. Football was a major part of his entire life. Working for Pan Am, Mike was able to travel the world as part of the Pan Am football team, and would later play alongside his brother, Alan. His number one team was Manchester United and his hero was George Best. If he wasn't playing it, he was watching it! He also enjoyed photography and won multiple awards for some of his art, although his brother's own football career may have been hampered by the constant flashing of his brother's camera at all his games. He also enjoyed playing snooker and golf.
Mike was an avid traveller and was fortunate enough to have seen most of the world, but his favorite trips were the ones that took him home to England, where he could spend time with his niece and nephews.
Mike left us all too early and did not get to enjoy his well earned retirement years. For those left behind, his mother, his brother and sister in law, his sons, the mother of his children, his nieces and nephews, his close companion over the last few years, and his friends, he will continue to be lovingly remembered in their hearts and minds.
