It is with heavy hearts that we, his children, announce the passing of our beloved father, Vernon Albert Tomko — a devoted husband, brother, grandfather, uncle, son, and true friend. He passed away peacefully on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 11:34 a.m., surrounded by family in Surrey, B.C.
Born on August 23, 1960, in Vancouver, B.C., Vernon was the youngest child of Bert and Alice Tomko. He grew up in the East Van neighborhood near the PNE.
Vern was known for his kindness, stubbornness, sense of humor, and deep dedication to his family.
He spent five years working at Totem Auto Body before beginning a long career at the PNE, where he worked as a mechanic, painter, gardener then general labour until taking early retirement.
Outside of work, Vern enjoyed demolition derbies at the PNE, karaoke with friends and family, and working on cars out back with his father.
He is survived by his ex-wife Deborah, and their four children: Tami (and son-in-law Darren), Jillian, Ryan, and Crystal (and son-in-law Travis); his grandchildren: Shyla, Tanner, Isabella, Makayla, and Devlan; and his sister Linda (and brother-in-law Vanes). He is also remembered by sister-in-law Cecilla, as well as his many nieces and nephews: Danine, Shaun, Kyra, Stacey, Vance, and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom will hold his memory close to their hearts.
Vern was predeceased by his parents, Alice and Albert Tomko, his brother, Clifford Tomko and his wife Anne Hrubor.
We, the family, would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Mission Hospital and Laurel Place in Surrey. Your kindness and care meant so much to us.
A Celebration of Life will be held soon.
You will be deeply missed, but lovingly remembered by all who knew you.
