He is preceded in death by his father Gavino Sustaita.
Jose is survived by his mother Maria Aurora Sustaita; his children Maria Melendez, Eva Melendez, Mary Lou Melendez and Elizabeth Melendez; 9 grandchildren; his brother Jesus Antonio Melendez and his sister Aurora Acevedo.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Funeraria Del Angel in Mission from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a rosary at 7:00 pm. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 3, 2017 at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McAllen. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Mission. Services are under the direction of Funeraria Del Angel of Mission.
