

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kathryn Ann Woods, a beloved mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who departed this life peacefully on July 9, 2025, at the age of 72. Kathryn was born on September 9, 1952, in Calvert, Texas, where her life journey began, rooted in love, faith, and a strong sense of community.
Kathryn spent her formative years in Houston, Texas, where she attended Blackshear Elementary School, Ryan Middle School, and proudly graduated from the historic Jack Yates High School, Oou ahh 3rd Ward High!! Kathryn was a member of the National Honor Society, Charmettes and ROTC during her time at JY. After graduation Kathryn decided to further her education which led her to Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia — one of the nation’s most prestigious historically Black colleges — where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and became part of a sisterhood that remained dear to her throughout her life.
After earning her degree, Kathryn returned to her hometown of Houston to embark on the start of her professional career. Kathryn professional journey started back home in Third Ward at Riverside Bank. Kathryn built a distinguished career in the legal field, as a legal assistant and word processor, working with several of Houston’s most respected law firms. Over the years, she contributed her talents at firms including Wood, Lucksinger & Epstein (WL&E), Johnson & Gibbs, Jenkens & Gilchrist, and Haynes & Boone. As a legal professional, Kathryn was known for her precision, integrity, and professionalism. Kathryn was very well respected amongst her supervisors and colleagues many of whom would go on to become lifelong friends. It was during this time Kathryn would marry Larry A. Woods (deceased) and gave birth to her self-proclaimed pride and joy, her son Larry Arthur Woods II.
A woman of grace, intelligence, and quiet strength, Kathryn devoted herself to making a difference in her community, and in the lives of all who knew her. Kathryn would become a distinguished member of Jack & Jill of America Inc. and served on several committees throughout her time as a member. Kathryn was a long-standing member of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. She carried herself with dignity and kindness, always offering a listening ear and unwavering support. Her legacy is one of service, compassion, and excellence.
Kathryn is survived by her son Deuce Woods (Shondra) of Missouri City, TX; bonus children LaRita Hatton (Jack) of Pearland, TX; Carlton Woods of San Antonio, TX; Marcus Marks of Houston and Mark Marks (Tonya) of Houston. Kathryn is also survived by her loving sisters, Lynda Johnson of Missouri City, TX; Wanda Jackson-Davis of Missouri City, TX and “sister cousin” Lychunn Johnson of Bronx, NY. Kathryn is also survived and loved by several nieces, nephews, and godchildren: Psharna Atkins (Errol), Shannon Jackson, Corey Clark, Delores Rainey, Curtis Johnson (Alex), Raven Hatton, Joshua Hatton. Kathryn will also be remembered by a host of cherished friends, and colleagues who will forever remember her warmth, wit, and smile. Kathryn was preceded in death by her mother Adlean Jackson.
Kathryn’s family would like to thank all of the nurses, caregivers and physicians that cared for her throughout the years.
