Bernard Leroy Gilbert

Bernard “Bernie” L. Gilbert – A native and lifelong resident of Mobile, died Tuesday, August 16, 2011, in a local hospital. He was a long time member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church. Mr. Gilbert was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. He retired as Local Union Representative of the Brotherhood of Railway, Airline and Steamship Clerks. Mr. Gilbert also volunteered with the Mobile Infirmary Auxillary for 20 years. He was a dedicated member of Loop Lodge #895 F & AM where he served as Worshipful Master 1968 and 1969, served as Secretary from 1989 to 2001, a perpetual member of the Lodge, and Senior Grand Deacon of the Grand Lodge of Alabama, 1996 and 1997, and a member of the Scottish Rite of Mobile. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eva Mae Mixon Gilbert and Prepy W. Gilbert; one sister and two brothers. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary D. Gilbert; three children, The Rev. Dr. Paula Gilbert (Stanley Hauerwas), Philip (Nelda) Gilbert and Laura Pryde; two grandsons, David A. Pryde and Andrew D. Pryde; one brother, A. C. (Sandra) Gilbert, Sr.; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home on Friday, August 19, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be Thursday, August 18, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
