
Buckner Woodford Hamilton, Jr. (Buck) passed away on July 9, 2022, at his home in Lillian, AL. He was born on June 16, 1943, in Mobile, AL to his parents, Ada and Buckner Woodford Hamilton, Sr. He was a 1962 graduate of University Military School and also attended Marion Military Institute and the University of Southern Mississippi. He served in the Naval Reserves and was deployed to Vietnam where he served in combat with the Marines as a Navy Corpsman.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Buck returned to Mobile where he began a four-decade career in logistics, first in Mobile and New Orleans with Ryan Walsh Stevedoring, then in Birmingham with Wallace International, and finally in Montgomery as owner and CEO of Alabama Food Service. He served on the board of the Alabama Trucking Association and as chairman of the Montgomery Area Food Bank. He retired in 2006 and moved to Lillian, where he was active in the Optimist Club of Perdido Bay and the Perdido Bay Power Squadron. He also served as chairman of the Bay Area Food Bank board in Mobile.
He is survived by his three children, Buckner Woodford Hamilton III (Kate), Sidney Lesesne Hamilton (Stephanie), and Emily Hamilton Shell (Jeb); his siblings Carolyn LaGroue (Walter), Sam Hamilton, and Noralyn Goddard (Michael); and his seven grandchildren Elizabeth Hamilton, Wood Hamilton, John Shell, Kit Shell, Elliot Hamilton, Ben Hamilton, and Corinne Hamilton.
A visitation will be held on Monday July 18th at noon in the Parish Hall at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, followed by a memorial service in the Chapel at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Feeding the Gulf Coast, 5248 Mobile South St., Theodore, AL, 36582.
