CATHERINE PATRICIA SULLIVAN CONDITT - passed to heaven on September 10, 2010, at 5:50am. Pat was born September 4, 1923, in Ironwood, Michigan to Patrick (Paddy) James and Hazel Hunt Sullivan. She told lively tales of life in the Upper Peninsula. She was an avid ice skater and cheerleader at St. Ambrose High School. She received her R.N. from St. Mary’s Nursing School in Wisconsin. Pat wanted to see the world, therefore she joined the U.S. Army and served in World War II. She was an Army nurse on the hospital ship the Wisteria. She served on four crossings from New York to France to bring the wounded home. During one torrential North Atlantic storm her ship was pronounced lost at sea. She served on a Panama Canal tour as well. Second Lt. Sullivan received a meritorious unit badge, American Theater Ribbon, Fame Theater Ribbon and Victory Metal. Pat met her husband, A.K. Conditt, during WWII. He was a medical doctor on the ship, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology for the European war brides. They courted in Bremerhaven, Germany in a borrowed Bentley. They married at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, New York in 1947. When their service years ended they moved to Nashville, TN then to Mobile where her husband had grown up. Pat and A.K reared her four children in “pill hill” before she returned to nursing at the Mobile Infirmary Intensive Care Unit. Pat Sullivan was feisty, fidgety, and energetic. She loved college football, bacon and eggs, solitaire, her brothers and sisters, St. Patrick celebrations, and hoisting a green beer or two. There was always an annual celebration in honor of her family’s native Ireland, and she loved watching the Friendly Son’s, of which a grandson is a member. Pat held dual citizenship, American and Irish. Pat taught her children to sing and harmonize to Irish beer drinking songs and Mitch Miller. She taught them her skills at bridge and poker.
She is survived by her children David (Chachy) Conditt, Cathi Windom, Patty (Joe Martin) Parris, all of Mobile and Dr. Margaret (Dave Bruno) Conditt of Cincinnati, Ohio, 9 grandchildren Dave (Lani) Conditt, Karen (James) Lickert of Atlanta, Susan Conditt of Jacksonville, Fl., Robert (Lauren) Windom of LosAngeles, Thomas ( Jen) Windom of Washington D.C., John Parris of Tuscaloosa, Matt Parris of Mobile, Josh (Carter) Bruno and Holly Bruno both of Ohio. She has 3 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, and two brothers. Pat lived her last eight and 1/2 years in assisted living. A special thank you to Jane Carter, Kelice, Joshua, and to all the Hearthstone staff for their love and care. A special thanks to Minnie Johnson, her wonderful, patient sitter for the past five years of her life. A belated thank you to Dorothy Thompson, her longtime housekeeper before she moved to assisted living. An Irish Wake will be held for family on Tuesday. On “WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY”-(date night for Pat and A.K.), September 15, 2010, visitation will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens on Three Notch Road from 9am to 10am, followed by a memorial service, then graveside interment. Condolences may be offered at www.mmgfuneralhome.com. Arrangements by Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 6040 Three Notch Road, Mobile, Alabama 36619.
