Anne Turner Gaillard (nee Cornelia Annette Turner) died Wednesday, May 6, 2020, at the age of 76, due to the coronavirus. Anne was born on March 21, 1944 in Mobile, Alabama to Richard Felder Turner and Cornelia McDuffie Turner. She had two older brothers, John McDuffie Turner, and Richard Felder Turner, Jr., and a younger half-sister, Nancy Turner Carroll. She graduated from the Julius T. Wright School for Girls in Mobile, and attended Stratford College in Danville, Virginia. She made her societal debut as queen of court in the Mobile Carnival Association in 1965. She was married on August 5, 1967 to John Caldwell Gaillard, and the young couple moved to Monroe, Louisiana. When their two daughters (Cornelia Elizabeth and Corinne Myers) were young, the family moved to Northern Virginia. They had a full, joyful life in Virginia where Anne volunteered for the Junior League, as a Girl Scout Leader, and later worked as a bookkeeper. She also assumed many roles at the family's beloved church, Pohick Episcopal, including the Altar Guild and was the first woman elected to the Pohick vestry.
After John's death in 2001, Anne returned to Mobile, seeing old friends, making new ones and getting involved in the community at Christ Church Cathedral. In the past few years, her health had declined due to dementia. Even as her mind faded, she was loving, kind, thoughtful, and well mannered, with a good dose of not suffering fools gladly and telling it like it is. Anne is survived by her two daughters, two beautiful granddaughters, her sister, her niece, nephews, many cousins, and treasured friends who made her laugh that wonderful laugh. Her ashes will be interred at Pine Crest Cemetery. There will be no service at this time. A memorial will be held, hopefully in the fall, if the conditions allow for safe gathering. In lieu of flowers, you are welcome to give a donation in memory of Anne Gaillard to the American Heart Association- Mobile, 2029 B Airport Blvd., #239, Mobile, AL 36606, which was a cause near to her heart; or to Christ Church Cathedral, 115 S. Conception St., Mobile, AL 36602.
