Curtis Lee Hass, age 99, passed away in his home on Friday, April 21, 2023. He was a kind, generous, and optimistic soul who will be missed and remembered by many whose lives he touched. He was born on June 3, 1923, to the late Columbus Andrew Hass and Irene Smith Hass in Pisgah, AL. Drafted into the Army at age 18, Curtis chose to serve in a medical battalion because he did not want to carry a gun. This gentle and kind spirit was a characteristic that he displayed throughout the entirety of his life. His first mission was the Battle of Normandy where Curtis bravely served and met General Patton. Curtis was proud of his service in the military and took every opportunity to share his story with family, friends, and strangers alike – while proudly dawning his WWII veteran’s hat.
After the war, Curtis moved to Mobile where he had a career selling advertising for the Mobile Press-Register for 35 years. He was active in many civic and community organizations. Curtis was a member of the masonic lodge for 60+ years and was bestowed the supreme honor of being named a 33rd degree Mason. He was also an active member of the Optimist Club for 50+ years. Always the consummate salesman, if you met Curtis then you likely bought an American flag pin or a calendar in support of the Optimist Club.
When asked the question “How are you doing, today?” Curtis (with a handshake, a smile, and a twinkle in his eye) always responded with “I do GREAT every day!” And HE did. Curtis was excited to reach his centennial birthday in a few short weeks, and although he missed that goal here on earth there is no doubt, he is celebrating his heavenly birthday.
Aside from his lord and savior, Jesus Christ – Curtis’ greatest devotion was to his family. He loved his family, and they truly loved him.
