

Dan was raised by his parents, alongside his siblings, in the Trinity Gardens community. He was a 1963 graduate of the former Central High School and a longtime resident of Mobile, Alabama. Shortly after graduating high school, Dan enlisted in the United States Army, where he served his country with honor. Dan later retired after 35 years of dedicated service as a foreman for the former Scott Paper Company in Plateau, Alabama.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John L. and Verdia T. Matthews; three sisters, Daisy Bradford, Sally Matthews-Drungo, and Verda T. Matthews; three brothers, John Clay “J.C.” Matthews, Franklin D. Matthews, and Arthur J. Matthews Sr.; and his great-granddaughter, Sami J. Gladden.
Dan leaves to honor and cherish his memory: a loving and devoted daughter, LaCynthia M. (Shedrick) Adams; two sons, Melvin D. Matthews I and Marvin D. (Benjanette) Matthews; five grandchildren, Alexandria J. Jackson, Melvin D. Matthews II, Karia (Sammie) Gladden, Isaiah M. Adams, and Keshawna K. Kitchens; four great-grandchildren, Julian Gladden, Samaj Gladden, Kamea Gladden, and Madison Mann; two brothers, Johnny G. Matthews and Charles F. Matthews; two sisters, Lorene Matthews and Lena Bettis; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Visitation for Dan will be held from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, Alabama. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow.
