He was the sixth of ten children born March 22, 1938 to the late Henry Wilton Moorer and Ellen Cloud Cassady Moorer in Ft. Deposit, AL. He was one of the three last surviving children.
He is survived by his loving wife of 15 years Nancy Tomlin Moorer, and his children Lisa (Danny) Erwin, Marla (Charles) Eddins, and Greg (Traci) Moorer. He greatly loved his grandchildren - James (Ashley) Erwin, Ellen (Phillip) Talbot, Wilson (Morgan) Eddins, Belle (Evan) Bedwell, and Autrey (Tori) Moorer. His great grandchildren were extra special to him and he always loved seeing them - Delaney Erwin, Quinn Erwin, Callen Erwin, Dawson Talbot, Finley Talbot, and baby Ann Wilson Eddins arriving in December. Along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, he is also survived by his brother Billy Rex Moorer and sister Nellie Grace Moorer Hill.
His wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren loved him so very much, and will miss him greatly.
Dawson graduated from Lowndes County High School in Ft Deposit, AL where he passionately played halfback on the football team, being selected for the 1956 Alabama High School All State Team. From there he went to work learning all about what he so loved - fixing cars! And for the next 40 plus years he did just that working at, managing then owning Auto-Sav Tire Store in Tillman’s Corner, AL. Dawson was very good at selling tires, but most of the time he could be found under a hood. He was an excellent car mechanic and his business flourished. He was called on by friends, family, neighbors, church friends, even strangers to work on their vehicles. He helped all he could anytime they called day or night.
If you knew Dawson Moorer, you loved him. You knew how hard he worked, how kind he was, how he loved to joke & cut-up sometimes, and how much he loved all his family and friends. And they loved him back because he was so easy to love.
He loved watching sports and westerns. His favorite western was Shane. He enjoyed his old Farmall tractor & planted a garden every year. He loved horses and was around them his whole life. He was a great carpenter, building piers, stairs & porches etc. He could do anything really! His favorite hobbies were fishing in Ft Deposit at the family lake, his horses, and turkey & quail hunting.
Most of all, Dawson loved his Lord and Savior, loved the Lord’s church, and loved Mobile Christian School where his children attended. He loved Christian education! He taught Sunday School many years, was a deacon then elder for many years, and served on MCS’s Board numerous years. All while working six days a week. He was a simple man, he did not complain. He was very happy and so content with what he had, a giver never a taker. He lived what he loved, and that was the good Lord and to go to heaven when he left this earth. He is home now.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday September 24 at 1pm with service to follow at 2pm at Creekwood Church of Christ 1901 Schillinger Rd South Mobile, AL 36695 with ministers Mr. David Sargent and Mr. Ricky Butts officiating.
