

Denny Merle “Demp” Smith – a 79 year-old native of Petal, MS and longtime resident of Mobile passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a B.S. in chemistry. Mr. Smith retired from Nalco Chemical Company after many years of service as a sales representative and served as a consultant for several years after his retirement. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the United States Army and was a longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church where he was very active in the Lifegate Ministry. He was an avid golfer and an able musician who loved to sing and play the guitar and harmonica. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Thelma Lee Smith; parents, Randolph and Phyllis Smith; and brothers, Maurice Smith and William Smith. He is survived by his children, Darlene Lenz (Kevin), Robert Smith, and Cynthia Smith (Julia); grandchildren, Maegan White (Michael), Brittany Smith, Cynthia Lee Lenz, and Caroline Lenz; siblings, Anthony Smith, Franklin Smith (Ann), Phillip Smith (Marie), Gail Smith (David), and Gloria Blackwell (Billy); numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street on Monday, February 10, 2014, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, February 9, from 2-5 p.m. Interment will be in the Wilson Annex of Whistler Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ United Methodist Church Lifegate Ministries, 6101 Grelot Road, Mobile, AL 36609.
