

On Tuesday, November 8, 2022, Don Willis Van Hyning, kind husband and father, passed away at the age of 81. Don was born December 26, 1940 in Akron, Ohio to Willis and Augustine “Ruth” Van Hyning. He graduated from the University of Alabama and spent his career working as a systems analyst in the computer center at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. On July 21, 1973, he married Yvonne Wehl and they raised one son, Kevin.
Don was a true intellectual and thinker with many diverse passions that included science, mathematics, engineering, art and nature. He loved taking long walks in the woods and collecting leaves. He was an avid reader, always visiting the library to stock up on books. He shared an interest in film and entertainment with his son and the two would often go to movies together. The two even compiled personal top-ten lists of movies and actors and compared notes. Throughout his life, Don also had an interest in personal fitness. He was an avid runner, golfer and tennis player.
Don was a definitive "family man" -- who prioritized his wife and son above all else. He loved them dearly and strived to build a secure and stable home for them.
Don was preceded in death by his father, Willis, his mother, Ruth and his brother Todd. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne and his son, Kevin, as well as several nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Pine Crest Cemetery on 1939 Dauphin Island Pkwy in Mobile, Alabama at 1 pm. Visitation begins at noon.
