Donna Wesson Smalley (October 8, 1955 – November 8, 2024), whose personality far outmatched her stature, was a friend to everyone she met. A beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, she was known for her vivacious and outgoing personality. She truly never met a stranger, and our world won’t be as bright without her shining in it.
Donna grew up an Army brat, living all across the country. She graduated from Etowah High School before attending the University of Alabama where she obtained her undergraduate and legal degrees in 5 years. While in school, Donna was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, the Mortar Board, an SGA officer, served on the staffs of both the yearbook and newspaper, all while graduating with honors.
After graduating from law school, Donna practiced law in Tuscaloosa where she ran a boutique law firm specializing in family law. Her professional career focused on helping the marginalized, the voiceless, and the under-resourced. Known as a bulldog in the courtroom, she was bold and courageous. But she was equally known for her kindness, class, and compassion.
After she retired, Donna moved to Mobile where she spent her time relaxing (as much as she had the patience for such), traveling, and cheering on the Crimson Tide. But what she enjoyed most of all was spending time with her grandchildren, nieces and nephews who affectionately called her Nana.
Donna gave to the point of self-sacrifice, both professionally and personally. She was kind beyond measure, loved with all her heart, and lived without regret. Her absence will be felt by all who had the pleasure to know her.
She is survived by the following family members: Son Trip Smalley and his wife Allison of Mobile, grandchildren Lana Smalley and Leo Smalley, long-time companion Michael Cornwell of Tuscaloosa, brother Randy Wesson and his wife Judy of Mobile, sister Deborah Wesson Gibson of Delray Beach, several nieces, nephews and grandniece's and nephews each of whom she considered her own, and countless friends who she treated like family.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Frances Yates Wesson and Lt. Col. Robert Eugene Wesson and her brother, Robert E. Wesson II.
The family is grateful to the many friends and caregivers who provided Donna with such compassionate care as she courageously battled cancer, most especially the incredible nurses, doctors, staff and volunteers at M.D. Anderson as well as Gloria Daniel and Barbara Hill.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 11:00 am at All Saints Episcopal Church located at 151 S. Ann St., Mobile, AL 36604 with a visitation to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, or your charity of choice.
