
Edith Wheeler Gilchrist – a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and a Mobile resident, was surrounded by family when she passed away at her home on September 5, 2012. Our beloved mother was a faithful Christian and a member of Government Street Presbyterian Church. “Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.” St. Luke 23:43. Preceding her in death were her husband, Dr. Philip Philips Gilchrist, and her parents, Lola Norred Wheeler and Daniel Wheeler.
Survivors include her sons, Philip Philips Gilchrist, Jr. and Dr. Daniel Wheeler Gilchrist (Dr. Hope Gilchrist) of Jonesboro, Arkansas; her daughter, Garth Gilchrist Gates (Michael); her grandchildren, Dr. Michael Gilchrist Gates (Meagan) of Birmingham and Philippa Gates Dean (Wesley) of Athens, Georgia; and her great-grandchild, Gabrielle Elise Dean. Other survivors include her brother, Daniel Norred Wheeler (Star) of St. Simons Island, Georgia. “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; . . . I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” St. John 14:16-18. The family is grateful to caregivers Luciana Broadnax, Mable Esters, Jennifer Foster and Kenyatte Robinson; to Infirmary Hospice Care and to Home Relief Services. A family graveside service will be held at Pine Crest Cemetery on Saturday, September 8, 2012 with the Reverend Sam Lewis presiding.
