
Dr. Elizabeth Ruth Godwin Allen (Betty) died March 5, 2016 after a courageous struggle with pulmonary and renal failure. Dr. Allen was born July 18, 1930, in Mobile, Alabama to Lily Ruth Crary Godwin and Robert Luter Godwin. She attended Woodcock Elementary School, Barton Academy, and Murphy High School, graduating from Murphy in 1947. She was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama and a Master of Education and Ph.D. degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. She was a social worker for the Welfare Department in Alabama and the American Red Cross in Houston, Texas. She taught elementary school in Mobile and was an Associate Professor at Auburn University at the time of her retirement in 1989. She moved back to Mobile from Auburn in 1992. Since returning to Mobile, for several years Dr. Allen was a reader for the blind at the Radio Reading Service at WHIL. She has also been active in the Huntleigh Woods Garden Club in her neighborhood, serving in several offices as well as writing the Club Newsletter. Dr. Allen is survived by her son, Conrad Merritt Allen Jr. (Janet) of Montgomery, Texas and her daughter, Kathryn Suzanne Allen of Hoover, Alabama; grandchildren, Tyler Gregory Allen and Casey Michelle Allen, of Montgomery, Texas; and Kyle Allen Griffin and Chase Merritt Griffin, of Hoover, Alabama. She is preceded in death by her husband, Conrad Merritt Allen, Sr.; her parents, Ruth and Robert Godwin; her brother, Robert Luter Godwin Jr. (Bob) with whom she shared a birthday of July 18, her nephew Robert Luter Godwin III; and her beloved aunt, Kathryn Crary. Funeral services will be held from the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home on Wednesday March 9, 2016 at 11AM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday March 8, 2016 from 5:30 – 7:30PM. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
