Dr. Eugene Augustus Quindlen, age 74, of Mobile, Alabama passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2019. Eugene was born December 2, 1944 in Asheville, North Carolina to Katherine Devine Quindlen and Eugene Joseph Quindlen. After graduation from Gonzaga, he attended Georgetown receiving a B.S. degree in 1966. Dr. Quindlen graduated from the University Of Virginia School Of Medicine in 1970 and did a surgical internship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, from 1970 to 1971, and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. In 1971, he entered the US Army Medical Corps and was a clearing station surgeon for the First Calvary Division in the Republic of Vietnam. Eugene came back to the States in 1972 as a medical officer at Fort Devens, MA, and returned to the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1973 to begin a neurosurgical residency, which he completed in 1978. He then joined the National Institutes of Health, Surgical Neurology Branch as a senior staff fellow and was a clinical assistant professor at George Washington University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. In 1981, Dr. Quindlen attained appointment to Professor of Surgery at the University Of South Carolina School Of Medicine in Columbia, South Carolina. In 1983, he joined the faculty at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL, as Professor of Neurosurgery and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. He remained in that position until 2011 when he retired as chairman but remained as University Distinguished Professor. He actively saw patients and taught medical students and residents until 2017.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Susan Stier Quindlen; children, Eugene Joseph (Marcy) Quindlen, Katherine Quindlen (Jeff) Riekhof, Christie Quindlen (Ryan) Taylor, and Camille Quindlen (Gaines) Johnston; grandchildren, Eugene Augustus Quindlen, Isabela Quindlen, Mary Christian Herrin, Preston Riekhof, Lila Taylor, Hyland Taylor, G. Johnston, and Audrey Johnston; three brothers; three sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Eugene was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Joseph Quindlen; mother, Katherine Devine Quindlen; and sister, Carol O'Neil.
A visitation for Eugene will be held Saturday, March 16, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 3704 Springhill Ave, Mobile, Alabama 36608. A mass of Christian burial will occur Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Pine Crest Cemetery, 1939 Dauphin Island Pkwy, Mobile, Alabama 36605.
