

Fanny Ripps Meisler, beloved wife of H.A. (Bert) Meisler for sixty-six years, passed away in the early morning hours of May 30, 2016. Fanny was born on February 28, 1929 in an apartment over one of her family's stores, Ripps & Ripps, at Dauphin and Water Streets. She graduated from Murphy High School and attended the University of Alabama, and the University of Texas, where she and Bert met. This wonderful partnership created a loving family and contributed to the enrichment of untold lives through their far-reaching philanthropic efforts, which include local, national, and religious charities, as well as their generosity to the University of South Alabama, establishing the Ripps-Meisler Endowed Chair in the College of Medicine, the Bert and Fanny Meisler Visiting Professor of History and Jewish Studies, and the Meisler Center. Fanny was well-known for her beauty, wit, and engaging personality. Her kindness and warm and accepting manner won friends in every interaction. Fanny loved a good joke and was a great story-teller. She loved animals as well as people, and was involved in dog rescue efforts. Fanny was a founding member of The Bluestocking Book Club of Spring Hill. She was an active member of The AHA vas Chesed Sisterhood and participated in the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Her attention to events and circumstances, great and small, resulted in infinite blessings for many. Fanny was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Anne Ripps, and her brother, Meyer A. Ripps. She is survived by her husband, Bert; brother, Harold Ripps of Birmingham; and children, Benjamin (Laura) of Spanish Fort; Martin of San Francisco; Allen (Nancy) of Birmingham; Irving (Natalie) of Birmingham; and Lori Movsovitz Edlin (Todd) of Atlanta. She leaves an example of family life, service, and involvement to thirteen grandchildren. Services for Fanny will be conducted by Rabbi Steven Silberman at Ahavas Chesed Synagogue, 705 Regents Way, Mobile, AL 36685 on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at eleven o'clock a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Ahavas Chesed Synagogue.
