Hazel Mims was born on the 14th of October in 1934 to parents Lois Myrtle Lang and Charles Douglas Lang in Dekalb, Mississippi. She grew up on a working farm and eventually left after graduating from Meehan High School in 1953. She met her husband, John Wesley Mims, in Houston, and together they moved to Mobile in 1956 to start their family. Hazel had her daughter, Laura, and her son, Darrell, whom she raised on her own after the passing of her husband in 1967.
Hazel spent the majority of her career working with the city and county of Mobile as an executive administrative assistant for the Fine Arts Museum of the South and the Museum of Mobile, from which she eventually retired. She was proud of the fact that she was not only skilled at short-hand note taking, but that she worked during the time frame when there was a switch from type writers to computers.
Hazel had a love for flowers and would always have at least one potted flower plant somewhere in her home or on her back porch. She was also quite skilled with drawing, after taking art classes and filling up a few sketch books with her work. Ultimately, what brought her the most joy in life was her faith and her family. She dearly loved Jesus, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Lois Lang & Charles Lang, her husband, John Mims, her sisters, Genevieve Hammock & Dorothy Rogers, and her great grandson, Grayson Camery. She is survived by her brother, Charles Lang Jr., her children Laura Bernice Dodd & Darrell Mims and her 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
