It was here where he met his future wife, Bobbie, where they worked side by side, married one year later and spent the next 62 years together. He retired from the position of Logistics Coordinator with the U.S. Postal Service in 1992, following 36 years of service. He served for 20 years as President of the Mobile Local of the American Postal Workers Union and for two terms as President of the State Federation. During this time he was accorded the honor of having the APWU Union Hall named in his honor. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Mobile Postal Employees Credit Union for 31 years. A longtime member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees, he served as President of the Mobile Chapter for 12 years and as President of the Alabama State Federation. His service to NARFE also included chairing many State and National level committees and he was honored by being presented the first statewide Floyd Clark Award for Excellence in NARFE Leadership. Herb was elected in 1998 as a member of the Alabama Silver Haired Legislature, representing District 101, and also served as Chairman of the Local Delegation. During his tenure, he initiated the Bill known as the "Senior Silver Alert" and worked diligently to promote its eventual passage into law. For many years he has been a member of Post #49 of the VFW in Mobile. Herb's greatest joy in life was enjoying all his grandchildren's athletic activities, especially soccer for which he had a passion, having grown up playing soccer himself as goalie on his high school varsity championship team. He was the ultimate grandparent groupie, traveling to every local, state or national competition, be it speed skating, football, swimming, soccer or anything else they were involved in. And at Bobbie's gentle prodding he never missed Lauren's dance recitals or her annual Nutcracker performances in Atlanta. Ranking a close second to his grand kids was his love for Alabama football.
