He was a navy veteran, serving in World War II and the Korean War. He was a Quartermaster in the Navigation Division aboard the Battleship U.S.S. Missouri. His main duties aboard ship were to assist the Officer of the Deck, Navigator, and Captain of the ship.
He was born on June 14, 1925 to Martin and Ada Dunlavy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Jaqueline Dunlavy Poe, wife Edwina Dunlavy, and seven siblings, Pauline, Stella, Ruth, Martin, Willie, Roscoe and Iris.
He graduated with honors from Murphy High School in 1945. He took a two-and-a-half year accounting course at 20th Century Business College, graduating in 1956.
He was a Baptist and a Mason since 1956. He loved to fish with his wife and three grandsons, whom he loved like sons.
He retired from the Postal Service in 1980 as Superintendent of Postal Services. He continued to work at various jobs until 2012. His last job was at Enterprise Rent-A-Car for almost 19 years.
Jack is preceded in death by his wife Edwina Dunlavy and daughter Jacqueline Dunlavy Poe. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Dunlavy Miller of Mobile, AL; grandson, Jacob Miller and wife Angela of Mobile, AL and their two children Abby and Jack; grandson, Carter Miller and wife Kelly of Maitland, FL and their two children JC and Lilliana; and grandson, Coleman Miller and wife Suzanne of Mobile, AL.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on March 18, 2020 at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, with a chapel service immediately following. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
